First gear selection

    All other gears lovely but sometimes by first gear is stiff to engage and sometimes it behaves as if synchro is not there ie change down and crunch - is it just a synchro or the selector fork?

    Any thoughts please.

    Neither - it's the nature (design) of the gear box, assuming of course that your clutch is fully disengaging.

    I never engaged 1st gear while the car was moving in a downshift.

    I only engaged 1st gear from a standstill. Any other time if the car was rolling, 2nd gear was my gear of choice. And I was careful downshifting into 2nd too.

    I just can't imagine a scenario where you'd WANT to downshift into first with a Dino.

    First why do you need to go to first?
    Second,this is very old technology and you kinda need to treat it as such, double de clutch and match those revs, if not, the synchro is going to have to do a hell of a lot of work, whine as it resists you and then, quit.

    Also I try never to drag from one gear to another, no speed shifting, make a two step, from fifth to neutral to fourth. Just a little momentary pause and it will feel a lot better. I do it changing up as well.

    +1. You have to treat these transmissions with a little "tenderness." Don't be afraid of the gate, but remember, this isn't a '68 Dodge Charger with a "slap-shifter." The transmission will respond very well to this procedure. Fred
