Some buddy's decided to inaugurate spring by heading from Jersey to Canada.
My major was just done, 81K on the odo, got a new clutch, got a new AC valve & drier & was itching for a drive and to see if the 308 can make it. I collected a list of all repair stops & Ferrari dealers along the way- in case. Tuns out we left Jersey (a 550, my 308, Audi R4, Audi wagon, Porsche Turbo) Friday afternoon, hit Newport RI at 7:00pm after dealing with I-95's bumper-to-bumper traffic and very bad rain. Curse you I-95, Conneticut & Boston! Left RI to Montreal via NewHampshire (heavy rain again) & Vermont & finally reach Montreal Sat. night about 7:00pm.
Got up this morning and saw it snowing heavy in Montreal. Nothing sticking, but changing to sleet & rain & icy roads. Down the NY thruway back to Jersey safe & sound.

    miles 1038
    gals 49.10
    mpg 21.14
    gas $$$ $146

Turned out I was so concerned about the car that I never listened to any music. Thankfully the engine didn't miss a beat. But my ears are still ringing.

Saw only two Ferrari the whole trip. A Red/Tan 430 Spyder on a flatbed on I-95 & a Red 360 coup same road, 1/2 hour later.

The wipers worked flawless. Thank god! (they've been known to stop mid-stroke). I applied Rain-X just-in-case. But that proved worthless.
I saw a couple of puddles of oil under the car during gas-ups, but I'm hoping they belonged to somebody else.

didn't burn a drop of oil.

The car is filthy. I'll take some pics of it before its bath & post a couple of the trip up.

During the major, the exhaust valves were found set to the same clearance as the intake. That was fixed. MPG is up from 15(ish) to 21. yes, the 15ish was pretty much highway driving though this was moreso.

We stopped every few hours to fuel up & stretch, so the 308 seat wasn't intolerable. But it felt good to stretch.

One of the worst things was the 308 sliding & bouncing into & out of the tire channels worn into roads from lots of car use. the 308's wheel's just aren't far enough apart to handle them and I got tossed about a fair amount. A little scary in the rain & sleet.

I did notice that after running a couple of hours & shutting down for 15 or so minutes then restarting the car, the 5-8 bank slowdown light would light-up like normal, then dim for about 10 seconds, then go out when the car was running. it never did that before. Bank 1-4 was normal.

Clyde, good meeting up with you the other day. I was the red 328 at Autosport in Huntington.

Nice trip! I'm glad the 308 handle it well without a hiccup. I know you have some photos waiting in that camera of yours that we would like to see!

Congrats! I'm psyching up for a trip of similar length to Mid-Ohio vintage races next month, thanks for the inspiration :)
Looking forward to pics and more anecdotes from the road.
    cheers

No backache, per se. But there was discomfort. But I can't think of a better excuse for a massage. Let me tell you about some places in Montreal ;)

But at 6'3 & 185lbs, I fit rather well into the seat. I tried finding a seat pad for the trip, but they were either too thin or too thick. I'll have to find one of those "Gel" seat pads that have seemed to disappear from store shelves.

    Clyde,

Sounds like a great trip!! I'm just surprised they let you back into the country! <grin>

I did a trip up to Montreal and Quebec a few years back with the Jaguar club in a 1972 XKE (the car in my avatar). Did it with a whole group of mostly 60's and 70's Jags, plus a couple of '50s XK140s and 150s. But we broke the trip up into smaller segments and stuck to back roads as much as possible, turning it into a 10 day trip. Up through NewYork/Vermont to Montreal, then over to Quebec City, back down through New Hampshire/Mass/Connecticut. Really fun trip, running with a bunch of old cars.

You are definitely "The Man" when it comes to driving the heck out of your 308. Can't wait to see some of the pictures. Now I'm really itching to get the 328 back on the road!! Let me know when you're thinking of taking another road trip.

    Regards,
    Steve

well, that's another story. The younger boarder-crossing guard was looking me over & quizzing me on all things Ferrari like
him: "This is a '91, right?" and to the 550 behind me
him: "That's one of the new 458's, right?"
him: "So you sure you own this car?"
me: "Yep, along with all the repair bills"
him: "Do you have the registation?"
    me: "Yep"
    him: "Can I see it?"
    me: "Yep"
    and on & on.

then him: "I have to make sure you didn't steal this car"
me: "Wouldn't I then be taking it into Canada to send it overseas?"
him: "You wouldn't believe what some people do"

with that, he let me back into the US. Go figure :)

    Some pics -
Starting at Gotham Dream Cars. Unfortunately, Noah couldn't make it do to some demanding business.
First stop after sitting in bumper to bumper I-95 traffic for more than an hour.
Time to get back out there.
trick shot of the 550 coming up quick
I like this one with the 308's reflection in the 550.
Dinner in Newport RI - EC Style :)
Heck, the lobster had to check his retirement portfolio after the market crash. We never did see if he made it home OK. Poor fella
The 308 the next morning at the Viking Hotel in RI
Yep, pleasant driving up to Mass.
New Hampshire/Vermont & the rain finally stops
The architecture in Montreal is spectacular. But what isn't showing in the pic is the heavy snow falling. Thanksfully not sticking on the road. Just snow, ice & some slush.
    Heading out of Montreal
The border crossing is the end of the nasty weather.
    Down 87 in NY
Then just 30min away from home.

All other pics are held in reserve. You have had to be there. When? We're doing something similiar for the F1. Be there or be square.

That's the updated flux capacitor (only way to keep up with newer cars)
interior pressurization (for when the car goes into hyperdrive)
Drive shift (from horizontal motion to verticle/hover)
    vents for the pressurization.

Well, let's try again- The GTB has
from back to front: Interior light, one button for map light, one for overhead interior, then the map light.
