Hi, I’m helping a friend tune up his 308 GTSi. Problem is, I’m not sure what year it is.
VIN says it’s a 1980, but rear panel says 308 quattrovalvole, which I understand did not come out till 82, and that QV logo in the back, I have only seen it in 83- and later models. Also, the steering wheel is the triangular non perforated type, which I have read came out later. It does not have the grille on the hood which I have seen in all the QV’s, It does not have the Ferrari badges on the fenders between the front wheels and the door, The wheels are 17” and do have the Ferrari logo in the center.
Does that description sound like a 1980?
I’ll post some pictures if I can figure our how.

Does the intake plenum says Quatrovalvole and can you post some pics? 1980 has the clock and oil temp gauge mounted vertically.

Me thinks someone stuck a Quattrovalovle emblem on an earlier model.

I'd believe the VIN in this case. Decoding the number will tell you exactly what it is. Also, AFAIK no 308 left the factory with 17 inch wheels or fender badges. Most likely, the other items have also been added on.

The main items that people are using to conclude its not are QV are as follows:
    - intake plenum is the type used for the fuel injected 2 valve engines (1980 to 1982)
    - speedometer indicates only to 85 mph; used only on fuel injected 2 valve engines
    - oil temp and clock gauges are vertically stacked; QVs had them horizontal.
    - front hood has no louvers; QVs had louvers

The A and B pillars are body colored, which only began in 1984 when Ferrari was simplifying their painting efforts. It probably means the car has been repainted.

Cosmetically the car clearly needs work but that only incriminates mechanical condition. It's not an indicator.

The serial number for the car is very unusual.

If you have this machine running big congrats!
Appears it has set for a very long time. I would highly recommend you change all the fuel/vapor lines before taking it out of the driveway. Also would do a timing belt / bearing change before moving it. Not expensive just time consuming. Lots of really good people here that can give you step-by-step instructions on what’s needed and how to proceed . Keep us posted on your progress! :)

Obviously been repainted from the 1st picture in post 6, at least partially. This car need a full restoration at least, if it can be saved. I'd bet if stripped to bare metal it would be a Bondo Queen. I could be wrong about the Bondo, but an 80, in that shape, without rust?????

Thanks to everyone for the quick responses.
This is my friends car, and I’m just trying to help him sell it. When I said tune it up, I meant to say, tune up whatever is wrong with it, not just the engine. The car has not been driven in about ten years. It starts and idles fine, but after it warms up, it runs rough. I’m sure the brakes, fuel lines and other things will need to be replaced. So far, the mechanic said that it appears that the fuel injection pump needs to be replaced, he said that they are around $3300. Can they be rebuilt?
It is obvious that the car has been repainted, Where would rust be apparent?
So probably the rear panel and steering wheel got replaced?
Are there two fuel pumps? A lift pump and an injection pump?
What seems strange with the serial number?
What about the wheels? Are they by Ferrari or aftermarket?
Are there shop manuals available for this vehicle?

I would not try to fix it if you are selling it. Just sell it as is.

You will never EVER get in the black with an 80 308 in that shape.

    The wheels are aftermarket.

And there really isn't a shop manual for that car like you are used to seeing with something else.

There is only one fuel pump. The pump pulls fuel from outlets at the bottom of the tanks so no in-tank lift pumps are needed. Precise fuel pressure is critical to the proper operation and is regulated by a pressure regulator. There are two fuel tanks on either side of the front of the engine. The Bosch K-Jetronic system is brilliantly simple. The injectors spray continuously. The amount of fuel they spray is regulated by the large unit in the rear right corner of the engine compartment. A key component in there is a big flapper valve that measures airflow and meters fuel appropriately. It's a pretty cool system; robust and stable.

The serial number may just be a coincidence. It's just odd that the last five digits are xx001.

Quoting because this is the truth. Now that you can prove it runs, if you are going to sell, sell. No dollar you put into it will come back to you.
