I had my first solo flight today at the Iowa City Municiple Airport. It turned out to be a great morning. My flight instructor sat in on the first three landings and had me do a full stop after the third, I have to say, beautiful landing. He got out and told me to do everything I had done previously and just go and have fun. Not to mention he wanted me to watch out for this ditzy pilot who nearly ran me off of the taxiway because she did not bother to look before turning off the runway onto the taxiway. But all said and done I departed runway 30 and had three more beautiful landings on my first solo venture. I am excited to get out to the airport tomorrow for my first solo trip to the practice area and work on my maneuvers before we begin training for the cross country! I feel on top of the world today, with this new found freedom of being able to go and fly when I want to now! (Of course I know that I still have a lot of dual training left, I'm just glad to be free! haha).

    Congratulations Brian!!! :) :)

Wow! It sure must be a great feeling!
Boy!! Do I envy you!!! ;)

I've got my pre-solo requirements in place now,
and am just waiting for the FAA folks in Oklahoma,
to say O.K. to my deferred 3rd class.
    (re: prev bypass surgery)
until I do, I'm just going to have to
practice more pattern work... If it stops raining...

Keep an eye out for Ms. Ditzy... ;)

Tripp, Charlie, and Brian. Heartiest congratulations !! I remember the day myself even if it was umpteen hundred years ago and there is nothing like it to be up there on your own and in control of that flying machine. An old saying that I remember: " Have fun but don't be dumb." Concentrate and focus on perfection in not only your maneuvers but your planning and decisions. Realize that you are just learning to walk so don't try to run or you can find yourself with an airplane that has taken off on its own and has left you behind in complete confusion. One of my instructors told me, " This airplane is just waiting for a chance to kill you, give it the slightest opportunity and it will take it."
    Take care,
    Switches

I also remember my first solo trip aound the patch - wasn't quite a hundred years ago - only about 40.

Keep in touch as you progress - we old guys like to hear about it.

    Congratulations!

From the old guys that I knew, a comment: " The 100 hour pilot is the most dangerous thing in the air."

Thanks Guys, [on behalf of "us learners".... :) ]

Unfortunately, this is, a once in a lifetime experience.
Once completed it's forever in the past.
But for the benefit of you (...ahem...) "old Guy's",
I'll be sure to keep you all updated as to the adventures in learning... :) :) :)

Well, at least mine anyway.........tee hee!
When the time comes, I'll try to give you all a narrative,
of that first time, around the "pumpkin patch"
    Stay tuned.........................

    Charlie

I've been thinking about my first solo and in spite of it being so long ago, I still remember the feeling of exhilaration and freedom. And every takeoff after that had a bit of the same feeling, leaving the earth and traveling into the realm of the airman. It is unique and reserved for those who have that special desire to experience flight and for those who have earned it.

On my first solo I bounced it good on the first landing. Fortunately I had the presence of mind to give it a little throttle to even out and proceeded to salvage the whole thing. After stopping I remember thinking to myself "do you really want to do it again?".... The other two landings went fine and the rest is history! Now I am one of those dangerous 100 hour pilots working on an instrument rating.

That was my one concern as I was running around the field. I know I'm not going to do anything stupid in the pattern or stall base to final, and I wasn't concerned about mechanical issues 'cause it's a nice new, well maintained plane. I figure anything that happens right over the runway is usually perfectly surviveable, but I had visions of a twisted prop, a wrinkled fuselage, and the FBOs unhappy face. Thankfully, it didn't happen, not even close, so I worried for absolutely nothing!

Now I just want to do it again!!

I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO WOULD GET THOSE VISUALS!!!!!
    NOT FUNNY BUT TOO FUNNY!!!!!

Whats that THEY SAY. If you have a plan B you probably wont need it....
The final question was to myself "can I accept the worst" .

    If yes "CLEAR PROP"
and tell her I'll be home before dark put my dinner in the microwave....

Brian, congratulations on your first time! I had my first solo in 1979 in a 152 and my experience was such as yours, excitement, nervousness and all the other emotions that mark the moment. You can exerience this again! I did my first solo in a helicopter in 2001 and lived through those fantastic feelings all over again!

Had my first solo today at Fort Collins/Loveland, runway 15. I was a little nervous, there was a bit of turbulence this afternoon, but nothing I couldn't handle.

The green & white 1977 Archer II flew well and didn't give me any trouble as I did 2 touch and goes and a full stop. It seemed weird not having my instructor in the other seat talking my ears off, but the training kicked in and everything just felt right.

Did you all do the shirt cutting after the solo? I had my shirt all picked out (a cheesey tourist shirt I got in Alaska that says "Alaska Bush Pilot" on it) I'm going to put my shirt on the wall, I think. Seems a shame that more and more CFIs are forgoing the tradition of the shirttail removal.

    Cheers!
    Sean
