So my parents decided that with one month left before I get my permit, I should probably learn about this driving thing...took them long enough! I am proud to say that my first time was manual and that I only stalled once. This next month is going to be way too long. Do you guys have any stories as to your first time?
My first time behind the wheel was driving my uncle's acura around his lawn. As far as stick goes I learned on my Father's Mondial.
hey Kieran my first time was behind an 87 Porsche cab, I was 16 and got my permit,my older brother sad go had now you can share the car with me and drive it whenever you want. I was 16 driving a Porsche cab which was an exotic back then, and yes it was stick. Ferrarijoe
as a kid, my folks always let me shift the '61 VW Microbus (family car) or dads '71 VW squareback (aka variant). I practiced for the test on private grounds with a '69 Corvair (the one Ralph Nader condemned & looked like a vette) So when it came time to take the test the grandparents gave us an old Buick Skylark. I forget the year. 70ish. Think Sherman tank size. it was automatic. My folks wouldn't let me test in the squareback/stick in case I slipped with the clutch. First car? '73 Pinto 2.0 liter 4cyl manual.
Ill never forget it..... My dad was a retired Air Force policeman and trained me as if i was going to join the next day and might engage in pursuits etc...! Took me to a empty parking lot that was closed. There we did figure 8's til the tires were screaming for mercy and more fun stuff. First time it snowed he could not wait to go out and teach me about driving in the white stuff. Thinking about it was kinda like going to Skip Barber, not to say dad was a pro. Had some good times.
Hahaha, you guys seem to have fun! All I did was a few laps of the Goldens Bridge train station lot in a Saab! I can't wait until next time though.
I remember the first time I drove stick shift, it was in my dads saab, (saabs are probably the easiest to learn on, other cars have much more sensitive clutches) I only stalled once or twice, and when I tried to reverse it. Kieran, I am sure you remember the first time I drove stick shift in the Mustang (much more difficult clutch), I must have stalled about 5-10 times just going down the driveway. The wait for the month before getting the permit is not even close to as bad as the 6 month wait to get you license, that feels like years. Once you get your license i'll let you take the Mustang out for a drive.
I learned how to drive on my mom's 74 MGB, and it was a stick too. If any of you noticed, this was the car I drove around all last summer when both my Fcars were in repair - undependable as MGs are, they are still more dependable than a Ferrari...
I learned on a friends Lotus Exige and wow that car is crazy to drive. Its also a good car to learn on, small engine however the car reves really high and sometimes hard to know when to shift right. Congrats on giving in a shot
Haha, I remember us pushing the Mustang back down the driveway!!! And they've now changed the wait to a freaking year. I'm going to die!
my son never was in love with cars so i tried to change that at 14 by teaching him to drive my ferrari in parking lot. i posted on the old fchat at that time and seemed 14 was the youngest anyone drove an fcar. he did pretty well but never became a car nut like me.
I was so car crazy as a kid (still am) I had it all figured out long before I got behind the wheel of a car. One of my first jobs was as the delivery guy for a local Drug store. They had a old Ford Pinto with a 4spd to do deliveries. The owner asked me if I could drive a stick, I said "of course" (Only knowing it in my head, with no experience) Jumped in and away I went. 100% self taught.
Who said it got changed to one year? On the NY DMV website it says you can get your junior license after 6 months. Here is the quote from the DMV Website: "If you pass your road test after six months of valid permit status, you will be issued a full-use junior license." Here is the link, it is about half way down: http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/broch/c41.htm
my first time was on a beach in Florida, I was 13, oh, you mean driving.....got in my father's big old station wagon with him, we were doing fine (it was an automatic) and he told me to take a left (I was doing 40mph), didn't tell me to slow down first, hit that turn with wheels screeching (my father screaming), I didn't do that again, we both survived. First time I drove a stick shift was off of a cruise, I was 17, rented a VW beetle in PR, $12 p/day, no gas or mileage charge, took that thing around the Island a few times, taught myself how to drive a stick, came back got a job driving a van for a dry cleaner a town away, had to drive a 3 spd on the column, no problema, I was a pro by then. Good luck, take your time, be safe!!!
you guys prolly wont belive this, but i learned to drive stick when i was 8, i grew up in germany, and my dad took me behind teh wheel of a porsche, and showed me how to do it, and i was actually able to move cars around the driveway. i could barly see over the steering wheel so i would move the car a lil, look to see where i was, and go back down and move the car a lil more
Unfortunatly, its only when you're 17 that rule applies. You have to have six months and be 17. So its still a year for me
I learned to drive stick when I was 13, on my old man's Saab 900 Turbo. He would let me drive around the parking lot at the office complex by my house, and he even taught me how to do a burnout, which i thought was especially cool. I do firmly believe, however that starting young really helps when it comes time to actually get your license.
your wrongg my mann!!! This is the deal, if you live in NY ofcourse... Permit-16 Juniors License- 6 months after you get your permit + completed road test... (i have one more month to go, and im purchasing my car next week! ) Senior License- 17, after completion of Drivers Education + 6 month probation If you get an unlawful moving violation, I.E. Speeding, the courts have the jurisdiction to suspend of revoke your license. :-(
Oh, thats great news! Which car are you getting? My grandpa just won a lottery over in England and sent a crapload of money to me. But my parents won't let get a car with it, saying "you need to learn how to earn something." It really sucks...but I can see their reasoning.
Good knews, but from what i can tell your definitely going to get let off easily. Good for you man! We seriously should meet up one day b/c i see we have the same interests and are in the same age etc. etc. Im looking to buy an 04 325ci, but the car i was just dealing with for over 2 weeks, had to be crossed out, due to the fact that i was going to be charged sales tax twice b/c it was a lease buyout. What a bummer... :-( I've been working full time since i was 12 in the summer, for a woodworking corporation doing standard work, and gradually i've been moving up the food chain but i haven't gotten a raise from $10 an hour yet. :-\ As for the car, im looking to spend every penny i've worked for, and then im going to save up for modifications. My father has an OBDII chip which monitors acceleration, speed, G-Forces, RPM's, time of driving, high speed of the day, how long i was traveling @ what speeds, etc.. Thats the worst part. So i can't even have any reasonable fun with it b/c i have a demon's eye on me the whole time. Good luck with buying your car, are you going to be paying for it in full, plus insurance? How much did your grandpa hook you up with? And yeah, im 100% sure on the NY State regulations. Start drivers ed A.S.A.P. so you don't have to do it later. Summer is the best. And when you're ready, take your 5 hour course and get your road test!
What do you mean by let off easy? And yes, I'd love to meet up with a fellow car enthusiast to spill every to...if only my parents didn't think everyone wanted to kill me! haha, if I can make it to LRP on Saturday, I'll be sure to see you there. I would have a job now, but I just got my SS number (I'm an English citizen by birth) so I'm going to start soon. As for the chip, that sucks. I'm sure you can find some way around it...the marvel of modern technology. I think if I spend all of my money on my car, my parents will pay the insurance. (the 10-15k from my grandpa might help their decision!!)
