Last night I took a friend of mine (female) for a ride in my 348. She had never been in a real sports car never mind a Ferrari. I gave her a good drive for sure. So much that at one point I was in third gear near redline and she is just laughing cause she was enjoying it so much. Once we turned back into residential area I had asked if she knew how to drive a stick and she did. So I pulled off and let her take over after a little bit of instruction. She was very thankful and said it literally made her entire week and she couldn't believe I let her drive it. She did pretty well for a first timer that's for sure and she really seemed to enjoy rowing through the gears. Anyone else ever let some take over?
Other than the Mechanic and his employees,it has not happened yet. ETA: I have owned it for 12 years.
Most certainly. I give 'em a little ear-full first but I have been known to let my peeps drive on occasion. Its not for the timid though, and I keep a tight leash on them as I have had some questionable experiences with a few of my Porsches etc. Once I gave a ride (just a ride!) to a guy in my Stradale. He was over 70 & I thought "this will be a thrill for him 'eh" - well anyhow I walk him over to the car & open the passenger door. Then he proceeds to literally FALL into the seat. I mean he just dropped all his weight into that carbon fiber shell (BTW he was about 250+ lbs) in one fell swoop. I could hear the seat protest. Hated it. I figured out then that it is not always fun for me - but what the 'ell.
Shortly after I bought the 328, I let a friend from the "GT-Four" (Celica All Trak) group have a go. But with a cold gearbox, he wasn't able to find 2nd gear, so he probably came away thinking it was a really hard car to drive.
I let my brother drive it the day I got it. He flew to Salt Lake City to meet me and drive it home. He's a bit of a bull in a china shop, and his very first act was to jam the shifter into reverse WITHOUT pushing down first. It made an AWFUL grinding noise that I've never forgotten.
I share whenever I can, particularly with folk who are fellow motorheads. One particular time,I'd just acquired the 330,a Lotus Europa owning mate came for a drive, about 6 miles,I pulled up in a layby and said "there you go,you saw how I drove it,give it a go",he was gobsmacked and said "no way" I said bulls#$t,it's insured,he had a great drive and comments just about every time we meet. Last year 2 mate's and myself drove both my cars from Brisbane to Melbourne(about 2000miles)for an event in Tasmania,I lent my 365 to a bloke I'd met once the year before at a similar event,he had just sold his C4 and wanted to participate in the Tassie one(carby cars only),I was more than happy to oblige.
Wait, what? I didn't know there's a reverse lockout. I'll have to look into that. Back on topic: I don't remember who drove it first, but I've tossed the keys to lots of folks around here. If they seem like a gearhead and not a jackwagon then it's generally ok.
Candy drove our 348 before she gave it to me for my birthday. So she drove it before I did. Also she had my nephew drive it before me. Candy was so secretive about her purchase that she has a bunch of co conspiritors all sworn to secrecy to keep me out of the loop. Since I officially became the owner, no one has driven the 348 except Candy of course. Howard Musolf 1981 308gtsi 1982 400i cabriolet 1994 348 spyder
my wife and my daughter drive the car when ever its the last car in the driveway, we have 3 cars with enough room for 2 cars side-by-side so the last car blocks the other 2. If its the 360, they take that to town or school. Since I leave the house before them and I come home late, its usually my turn to drive it, my daughter actually prefers driving my S2000 if its sunny, other than that, the 360.
I let my brother, a Pantera owner, drive it first. Others include my other brother and brother-in-law and a friend who I used to commute with every day for years.
I let a couple of my car enthusiast employees drive mine. Also let my friend with an NSX drive it and he let me drive his NSX. My wife has driven the 328 one time in 6 years of ownership, I think she's been a passenger in it maybe 3 times. My dog has gone for more Ferrari rides than my wife has.
I let people drive the 308 and now the 360. I pick the spots and time. It is amazing how many people decline the offer. I am sure fear has a little to do with it.
I had driven Ferrari's before owning mine, and I am always happy to introduce others to the experience..almost always with me as co pilot. It helps to coach newbies through the first drive a bit and then, after they are acclimated, point out the sounds and sensations that make the cars so special.
I'm looking forward to my wife driving our 328. I think it'll be hot. She's just recently started driving a manual (in her new DD), but should be ready for the summer. In the few months that it's been on the road since I've owned it, my car's been driven by... 6 of my friends and 4 family members. I won't be lending it out like I would my pick-up, but I'm happy to share the experience. I did have one pucker-inducing moment. In Schenley Park (site of the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix) there's a particular 180 degree corner with elevation change and stone walls. One of my friends nearly gave me a heart attack when he lost his grip on the steering wheel mid-corner. My only advice: choose the roads wisely before letting a friend without sports car experience drive your Ferrari.
Sure, most of my friends have taken it for a spin. And only one went for reverse thinking he was going into first. I stopped him in time.
Love to put friends who have never experienced the drivers seat get behind the wheel. You really can't get the complete Ferrari experience without it.
Let my wonderful beautiful wife drive my recently purchased 1969 365 GT and she was so rough shifting, I almost passed out...
Insisted that my wife drive the 360 F1 Spider. she loves stick shifts and was very uncomfortable...especially parking. afraid to hit something. she thought 400 bhp was way too much for her. She loves her stick boxster S w 315 bhp and probably will never drive the Fcar again. She thinks I drive too slow when she is a passenger in the Fcar. LOL
I let a friend drive mine, And he didn't get over 10MPH he thought he was going to break it. While it was painfully funny to me he did enjoy it. I also let his wife drive my Corvette, she was not afraid to break it and drove it like it should be driven.
Another F-Chatter and I swapped cars, my F430 for his AM DBS...no issues/worries for me. He owns a 430 Spider and knows how to drive an F1. My wife, on the other hand...she wanted to drive our Scud...nope! So I let her drive our F430 around our local gated, private airport. Not much to contend with there except for the occasional aircraft in the taxi lanes. I think I probably scare her a bit. She had driven a California and a 599 with Cam from CNC, so it wasn't her first Ferrari drive, just her first with me watching her every move. She was fine at the airport, but I'm not looking forward to a real road drive.
Many friends have driven it and one friends wife. I never take someone out for a spirited drive before turning over the keys. I drive it calmly and show them all the details, then let them take over. After they have driven it I might give them a bigger idea of what it's all about. I don't want a noobie to think they have to push the car hard before they really get a feel for it. I think these cars are exceptional even when going slowly.
