I've purchased a new set of plastic centre caps for my 348 standard wheels. Can anyone advise the best way to remove the old caps and fit the new caps. I intend taking off each wheel separately. My assumption is that the centre caps push out from the rear and are re-fitted from the face by just pressing them into the wheel.

There were little black plastic legs on my caps. Squeezed them in and the cap pops out. Done with wheel off and from the back/inside out.

New ones press in from the front/outside in.

Before you fit the new ones, go to the hardware store and get 4 rubber washers. Look in the plumbing dept and get O-ring type washer that fit on the inside of the cap. i forget which size, maybe 1 inch. Take the cap with you. Press these on with the cap. That will keep the cap tighter and water proof. If you look inside the hub you will see rust from water leaking in. This will stop that.

The is supposed to be an o-ring (reusable) already on the wheel where the center cap is pressed into the wheel. It is p/n 120065 (http://www.ricambiamerica.com/product_info.php?products_id=194854). They do get kind of ratty, and you could probably buy 100 for $2 at the local hardware store. Nonetheless, there is an 'official' Ferrari part number for them.

Depends if you want to keep the old ones or not. If not, you can easily drill 2 holes in the old ones, drive a rope through these holes, and extract them from the outside. If you have nothing else to do on the car with the wheels removed, that will avoid you this pain.

When you put the new horsie wheel caps in, make sure they are all facing up the same way mate. ;);)
It took longer taking the wheel off, than it did replacing the cap. :D:D

Here are some pics of mine mate. :):)
No step by step instructions needed here mate. Very easy to do. :):)

Me too mate. So far so good!! :):)

Daniel was right (as always). The old centre caps pushed out easily from the inside and each one had an O-ring already fitted. I put the old O-ring behind each new centre cap and then pressed the caps on from the outside (it was a hell of pressure required but there's no way they will come off from the outside). I jacked up each wheel separately and took the wheel off as I wanted to clean/detail under my guards as well. The rear wheel jacking went great Pap - no dramas. I had to fit the trolley jack in from the rear as the car was too low for me to get at the jack handle to start pumping from the side. Anyhow, alls well that ends well. The new caps look great thanks to David at Ricambi. The old ones were'nt too bad but had faded with age (it's amazing how much the Sun fades coloured plastics over time). I've seen the same thing happen with Jaguar badges which have faded with exposure to the Sun. Just on the wheels - it's also amazing how quickly road grime and brake dust build up on the inside of the wheels. It's a good idea to remove your wheels once in a while and clean the insides. They also look great when clean and viewed from the outside looking in.

Anyone know the size of the wheel caps? Are the front a different size than the rears? Are the fronts 49mm? and the rear wheel caps 43mm? Anyone locate a less expensive after market knock off version?

If you're really mental, make sure the horse points the correct way. Looks like Ferrari would put the valvestem at 12 o'clock above the horse's head.

This was the only picture I could find remotely close to something that I thought would be "factory".

Porsche guys put the valvestem at 6 under the point of the shield. I learned about that at a porsche show, and ALWAYS look, no matter what the car.

Is $115 for a set of 4 OEM caps too expensive? (for a Ferrari owner, that is)

I was thinking the same thing, price seems normal and reasonable to me and I am far from well off. Don't price a new MAF for gods sake you may go into cardiac arrest. [emoji39]

Steved033 - what a catch! what an eye for detail! Yes. i'll go with the air valve at 6pm and the horse at 12pm. I hate to say it but i'm going to judge owners going forward based on your criteria if they caught this detail or not. anyone know of any weighted wheel caps that keep the horse centered likes Rolls Royce has? Steved033 - What other OCD things do you notice? I'm on the spectrum when it comes to details on my 348. if you're ever in the NYC area look me up - I owe you at least a cup of coffee for that detail. Good Call!

On the 348 the air valve will be at 12 (or at least that's what the picture I found shows... I'll be honest, it's the first time I went to look at how Ferrari did it. I thought it was basically standard to have them at 6.

searching "348 brochure" shows spoke down, which means valve at 12. HOW STRANGE!

As for noticing, I'm an engineer, I do paint correction as a hobby, I'll learn something interesting/weird about one car (like press/brochure photos and people who will turn their wheels to match at a concours), and then see if it applies to others. My 348 is an '89...so I'm odd already. '89s have no front horse, and a rear black horse. The rear brochure pic above is interesting in that ALL the lights that can be lit in back are lit. Brake, fog, hazard, running, reverse...

I can't unsee when people have their directional wheelsets on wrong. I can't even look at new hondas as the directional wheels are just 4 wheels and point back on one side and forward on the other. I would literally NOT buy one for that reason.

Lol. Yes. Being observant can be a curse. I just got a 91 348. Chrome horse in the back with no front horse. I"m going to get the front horse and i think i'm going with a Fabspeed.com front license plate holder as its the only license plate holder that shows the whole horse. the Carbonio removable license plate holder crowds the front horse. I dont want to hijack this threat for license plate holders. To your point i'll keep an eye out for 348 tire valve positions. I'd be happier if the 348 was the only Ferrari to be photographed/produced with the tire valve at 12pm(not 6pm). I"m going to try and start 348 Driving Day globally - every March 4th starting at 8 am ("348"). Please check out the thread as 348s are the best analog sports car Ferrari made. We need a community like air cooled 911s have.
