Chaps Am rebuilding the engine after having done the valve guides and am at the point of fitting the intake plenums. And all the fiddly bits (clamps, rubber sleeve and two half moons). It’s fiddly as hell and wondering if anyone has any tips or tricks?
1. Plenum upside down 2. Put the rubber parts in the sleeve (I added a small amount of silicone grease to the rubber) 3. Attach the sleeve with rubber to the plenum, tighten only to 2-3 threads in 4. Flip over plenum. They should still be attached. 5. Slide onto throttle bodies. Should pop on with a good push. 6. If not, the sleeves are too tight, loosen 1/4 to 1/2 turn and try again
Ta, tried that but obvs had it too tight. This, along with the head nuts, are by far the biggest pain so far!
If the engine is still out of the car it’s pretty easy, you just do them one at a time and take your time. You will drop a half moon every so often but that’s the way it is. Keep a magnet handy.
Yup as above Do not put anything together except place the rubbers on the engine, then put on plenum Then put on 1 half moon, then next, then clamp, then tighten lightly. Maybe half way. While putting them on I make a point of turning clamps so I can get at them with engine in the car just in case.
Done. Fiddly as f***k but done now. Onto the exhaust manifolds. Those upper nuts in the middle are also a giant bloody faff!
It’s because of these little jobs that makes me wonder when others say they can do a major with belts swapped in 8 hours. Takes me an hour to get those off and another to put them on. Ha ha
Yup, all those fiddly jobs have taken me simply ages. Nothing difficult per se but hugely time consuming. I was hoping to find some trick / knack but in the end it was just a lot of patience and 4 letter words.
