    Hi Everyone,

While admiring the underside of my car I noticed there are some small patches on the chassis where the paint is flaking and there's some light surface rust. Nothing major or structural but keen to address for aesthetics and to stop any deterioration.

Grateful for any advice on best approach and products to use. Looking to only do affected areas at this stage, but to blend in with original paint finish and ideally using a brush if possible as access to spray could be a PIA. Based UK FWIW.

Can't believe I'm alone on this but couldn't find any recent previous posts.

Thanks in advance for your help

This is an easy to work with product, just degrease the area, scrape any flaking paint away, and paint on with a brush right over the rust. Two coats, it dries rock hard and black. You can top coat it if you wanted to, it will degrade under UV light, but in and under the chassis you can leave it as is. Water based, so easy to work with and clean up.

Is this stuff better than the Permatex converter?

Just curious, I use that fairly often on things, but I don't think it has much durability unless you paint over it after the conversion

This job can be a slippery slope. The best way to do this is to sand the chassis wherever it is flaked until there is a seamless blend to the old paint followed by primer then paint. It can get away from you quickly and turn into a huge job. this is done ideally during an engine out service. If all you want is to do tidy it up and prevent rust from spreading then I would lightly sand all the rusty areas, treat them with a rust converter, followed by an etching primer and then paint. As for paint I have found that SEM Trim black is a very close match to original. All the other items should be readily available from different manufacturers at you local Halfords.

I think they are the same. Unless exposed to UV, top coating is not necessary. But the Wurth Satin Trim paint is another good product that would be close to the factory black chassis paint if you wanted to topcoat.
