Well with just 60 miles on the newly installed Stebro muffler on my 77 308GTB 2 people at different times have told me I'm shooting flames out the exhaust on decelleration. Looking back thru the archives it looks like this maybe somewhat normal on other f-cars but no mention of 308s. I figure its either:
    a) too rich
    b) cross fire of plug wires
    c) bad distributor caps
    d) burned valve
    or the most likely cause,
    e) I have secret one off factory hi-performance engine with huge valves & cams.
any other ideas? I hear the kids love these flames in their pimped Hondas & Toyotas with the fart can exhaust.
Should I fix it or wait and hope for Nopi Tunervision babe to appear?
    Bill

Should have got a tubi! But you should be celebrating thisis the high point in your life!

BTW this is normal for a carbed car with after market exhaust. Unspent fuel that is not burnt in cat or thermal reator makes its way to the exhaust tip, meets oxygen, and wahla flames.
I remember when I got my tubi my wife said flames are shooting out your exhaust! I said YEAHHHH!!!!

I've seen it on other Fcars as well. Followed a 246 around the track and loved seeing it shoot flames on decel. Now I can't wait to get my Stebro on. How do you like the sound Bill?

Does one "hear" said flames, or do they just fluff out there without fanfare? I hear no great pops or back fires when powering down, so I keep wondering if my lil "Dino" emits said incandescent vapors.

My 85 Rx-7 did the same when I installed the racingbeat streetport exhaust(headers & twin presilencers). Others think that I either installed the coil kit for flames or my car was on fire....lol

My 328 shot flames while at a track event during a cool November morning. I had just installed my Tubi. I knew something was up, because there was a "POP" on every WOT upshift on the straight. And also when a 355 driver came to me in the pits and said, "HEY YOUR CAR IS ON FIRE!!!" LOL! :D

Definitely the first choice would be waiting for the babe !

But if she doesn't show up... Since you have a '77 I don't think you have any thermal reactor or cats right? Do you have stock ignition or do you have a crank triggered set up?

Stock ignition properly set, no cats or thermo reactor.
Thanks to all for comments, now I'll need to get a night/dusk picture since its evidently not broke.

If in fact you have no cats, then you answered the issue of the flames.

The cats were buring the unburned gasses and now that they are not present, the gasses are collecting and burning at one point in the exhaust cycles.

The other possibility could be that the toilet paper packing in the muffler is now burning!

    What he said.

What can I break/misadjust in order to get the flames?

    Jon,

There's a Mexican restaurant just off the 5 going South before the Washington Street exit in the old town area.

Try that and w/in 1/2 hour you'll have plenty of flames!!

My car spits fire too ~ 1976 GTB, non-catalyst with an ANSA Sport exhaust replacing the thermal reactor muffler. As Robert Garven explained, this is typical with aftermarket exhausts. It happens most often on deceleration and, as Chad mentioned, a rich fuel mixture is contributory. Even with everything properly set, you can induce some flames by flooring the pedal prior to deceleration. A low-pitched pop/thud kind of sound accompanies the flames.

While no low pitch, the car here threw flames at the track and have seen other 308s do the same. Am wondering if having an ignition that also has waste spark sequence would cure this?

I agree with 308 GTB, a free flowing exhaust will help...My friends '04 Srt-4(357hp w/Stage 3 Mopar) has a 3" downpipe and 3" straight through exhaust. He throughs flames mainly on decel from high rpms. Mine does it on the way there and back, lol...

I love the low pitched rumble and pops on decel with my stebro. I don't know why you'd think this a problem. Better too rich than too lean.

If all ignition is working properly it's just excess fuel..and Steve is right it is the advance not moving rapidly enough, IMO, or actually it has retarded due to low RPMs (centrifical weights)

If a bank cuts out for a few seconds and THEN lights off, you can get about three feet of flame but eventually your headers will fail....

Agree it is just hot exhaust pipes, my car will pop on shut down if revvng just before turning key..

None of the above is recommended!

If your headers shatter, sadly the flames are much hotter and directed square at the RH fuel tank.........

    Move quickly...........
