I was speeding about 110 and noticed an undercover vehicle with flashing lights in his grill so I slowed and pulled to the right of the highway. Since there was no shoulder, I proceded to the nearest exit and pulled off.

As I pulled into the off-ramp, surprisingly the "cop" kept going straight and left me baffled as to why he did not follow me! Believe me, I ain't complaining, since it would've been a hefty fine. However, I immediately became suspicious and thought that that "cop" might just have fake cop lights on his car just to jack people around. Waddya think? It actually pissed me off and I thought about getting back on the highway to track this jerk down. But it was too much of a pain....

Isn't impersonating an officer a felony?

Yes, it's a felony, if you got their plates you can report them. Just don't tell them your speed :D

pulled someone over in, get this, a light blue Toyota Camry,
lights flashing and all. Overall in Miami, alot of undercover,
    "regular" cars being used.

That's what I thought too! Is a speeding violation considered low on priority? I'm dying of curiosity.....but as you say, what if it WAS a real cop, I sped up to him and got his plates???? Uggggghhh....too many "what if's."

My guess is it was a detective not a regular beat cop going on a call.

I've been flashed before for doing extra efficient driving and the cop went right past after I slowed. Done on the M/C and in my car. Sometimes they just want you to slow down but don't want to get out in the heat/rain/cold, are headed in for the end of the shift, etc. Sometimes they just want you to respect their authority. He might have sports cars too and realized that you're just a middle aged individual out enjoying your car not intending any harm. My brother was pulled over for running his track prep'd BMW through an intersection sideways. When the officer looked over the cars prep work and they compared notes on racing he let my brother go.

Cops or not, he did a good job by making you slow down and exit.
Maybe we need more jerks like this to make other driver more alert.

I had a situation in Florida. I was driving about 95 on the I-95 from Ft Lauderdale to Palm Beach at night. I look to my right and I see a highway patrol car right along side of me. He signals with his hand "slow down". I do and he just went on ahead of me.

    Sometimes, you just get lucky.

Did this car have a government license plate? I've had experience like this once, was a Crown Victoria, tailgating me. The car was painted black and white with driver's side chrome spot light attached to the side mirror. It has no sign on the vehicle stating it was a police or hwy patrol. It followed me very close for about 30 second, passed me and then proceed to do the same to the car in front of me. As he was passing me, i saw 4 young kids in the car, and the car had regular plates so I knew it was probably some kid playing around in their parent's car that used to be a patrol car. Looks like they were having fun trying to scare people thinking that it was a cop following them.

I've had this happen before... in my case it was a cop car who wasn't into pulling me over, but wanted me to slow down.

I have a few LEO friends and I had asked them about this... there can be any number of reasons they would do it. They could be on a special assignment (like an escort, or on their way to pick a perp up on a warrant), or on their way to a call, just about to go off duty, or they could be a sheriff or Dept of Corrections vehicle (which around here have blue lights but don't generally pull people over).

All the cops I know take impersonating an officer VERY seriously, partly for public safety but also because it pisses them off that someone is being a wannabe of their job. There was a big internet story before of a guy who did this and they got his plate and exposed him on a site, and the real cops got involved, and it was discovered he was always under scrutiny by the real LEO's.

All told, 3 passed me by yesterday doing 100+. 1st could easily have nailed me for 15 over, as they're strict around here, and my mind was elsewhere.

1st & 3rd had wig-wags, 2nd was hideaways - 2nd & 3rd lagged - but they were all en route to a crime scene. Locals call the area's Section 8 dive "The Cabin" for the rhymes - this time it was a Stabbin' at the Cabin... not a Cappin'.

+1 . I was driving home @ 2.00am on a motorway one night doing "a little bit" over the limit (70mph where I am), when I saw blue flashing lights at a motorway entry slip road, just sitting there. I was the only car around and expected the worse so lifted off the gas and passed the patrol car (a full battenburg so I knew it was genuine) @ 80mph. As I rolled passed he turned the blue lights off and accelerated as hard as he could to catch me up and then sat behind Me @ 80mph. He escorted me this way until we reached the county border and then took the next exit to go back down the otherside of the motorway, leaving Me to carry on My journey.

I straight away appreciated that this was good policing. I wasn't bothering anyone, he just wanted Me to slow down a bit and he didn't want all the paperwork involved.

(The reason he was waiting for Me was because all of our motorways have observation cameras on them and they had calculated My speed over a set distance.

He left Me at the county border because I was then off his patrol area and technically no longer his problem. That's not to say he had no jurisdiction however, Our police can follow you the length of the country if they have to, but the next counties police take over priority in any pursuit, mainly because they know the area better. There's no such thing as running for the state line in the UK.

Also, a battenburg is the nickname given to UK patrol cars because of their markings, like a batenburg cake, just in case anyone didn't know).

Here in Nevada the NHP has notified everyone that they will be riding in the cabs of semis to find people who violate the space of trucks by following too close or changing lanes in front of them too soon. Not sure how they will be stopping the cars, but if you see a semi with lights flashing behind you pull over.

You'll never know. It happened to me once. I was driving back from work, doing the speed limit and getting bored..so i downshifted and sped up to about 80 ( traffic was around 65 ) and when i look at my rear view mirror i see this big pick up with flashing lights in the grill so i make my way to the emergency lane and stop just to see the pick up continue on his way.

Could have been a cop with something else to do or a kid having fun..

that's what's killin me...the "i'll never know" part....why would someone go to all that trouble: buy the fake cop lights, have them installed....just to jack people around? isn't that way too risky? what if they jacked an undercover cop around?

I was on the way back from the Poconos " festival of speed" in my Benz. going just over 100 and got pulled by a state cop. Gave the guy no B/S, he could not have been nicer.
Gave me a ticker for " failure to yield to a traffic control device ". No points, So I was happy to pay !!

    Had that happen before...

70 in a 55 because the merge ramp was just more fun at that speed...I saw big square headlights closing in on me, pulled to the right, and he pulled right along side me and just looked at me. I downshifted, letting the car slow down by itself to 60-ish, and he goes on his way.

I was fine with that. :)

I like that. I'm using it next time I get pulled over.

Ociffer: Excuse me son, do you know how fast you were going?

Myself: Not really...I was just trying to utilize my car's ability to get from point A to point B as efficiently as possible...isn't that what all those crazy government agencies are pushing for nowadays anyway? Efficiency?

    Ociffer: ...grumbles...hangs head...

    :D

If you're a bit too fast on French motorways and a police car comes near you, they overtake and show a "Ralentissez SVP" ("Slow down please") sign in their rear window. I think telling dozens of drivers to slow down (which you inevitably do) this way is a lot more effective and contributes more to motorway safety than pulling out single cars and fining their drivers.

That being said, French motorway cops drive like maniacs.
