Here are some more pictures from the box of old film photos. A good friend and I were regulars at the government surplus auctions. When the imminent arrival of the USS Missouri was in the news, we would talk about the event on our early morning ride out to Barber's Point Naval Air Station where the auctions were held. He is a professional cameraman. The subject was often about how to record the event. The news provided the information about arrival time and the route taken. It was to be towed north of Molokai, across the channel, and enter Pearl Harbor.

We found an airplane owner that was also interested in going out to meet the battleship. He had a very nice Partenavia. A cool airplane with great visibility and an open camera port in the floor of the passenger cabin.

On a close pass down the starboard side. This is the "surrender deck" area. The representatives of Japan signed the instrument of surrender on the 01 level deck next to the number two 16" gun turret, just forward of the 5" mount.

    Hi

ChipG and Jim: thanks for the positive words and encouragement.

I found this picture on a naval history website. A band and color guard is on the maindeck. The dignitaries are gathered on the 01 level. The 5" gunmount is fully elevated and the ship's company is everywhere. They certainly must have been aware of being witness to history. Check out the sailor on the yardarm just to the left of the 16" gun barrel.
