Today I really floored a 2nd into the max revs inside a tunel (I wasn´t looking but it must of gone to 90000RPM). Suddenly the engine silenced for a moment, or cut off, I think I imediately, and by instict shifted to 3rd and the car behaved normally.
Other cars (non ferrari) usually have a series of small bangs at this limit, I ask, with the 348 what do you experience when at maximum revs ? Is what I experienced usual/normal?

your engine should have hit the rev limiter at 7,800 rpm. when this happens, the revs will start to pulsate as it drops down and back up to the limiter back and forth

are you sure you were at 9,000??? that sounds dangerously expensive :)

My has been on the rev limiter a few times in 1st and 2nd and it does what every other car does........it bounces on the limiter. :p:p

The revs always drop and you lose power momentarily when it happens. As for your engine completely cutting out, I have never heard of that before? :):)

Quick suggestion.....jump in the car and do it again and see what happens! :D:D

As I said I wasn´t looking at the rev counter so I can´t clarify what revs I reached but I was flooring for a while enjoying the engine symphony. Sorry about my poor ENglish, what I ment to say is the engine silenced for very short period (maybe a second) I didn´t mean to say it "cut off" because I guesss that means it stoped working and I had to turn the key again, which didnot happen.

Is it possible that it sounded like the engine went totally silent only because it got a great deal quieter after hitting the limiter, but didn't actually cut out?

I've heard from VERY reliable sources that Ferrari ran these to 10,000 rpms for long durations in testing for the F50...

You cannot hurt it! Drive the s**t out of it.....After all, they eat money anyway, at least get every nickel out of it!

This is a gag thread, right?

In case it isn't, the 348 rev limiter is different for the models. Mine is redlined at 7500 but limits at 7750 or so. The limiter cuts out fuel and that's why your engine seems to stop working until you drop below the rev limit. That is when the gas starts pumping again. The object is to not "bounce" off the limiter. Shift earlier. Start using your ear for the proper exhaust note.

    Class dismissed.

Seriously, IDR is correct. Sounds funny as he wrote it above, but take stock in that comment. :)

Does a 1990 have a limiter? I notice if I go into the orange zone of the tach, my check engine lights come one. One I'm back in the normal zone of the tach it goes off. Is that normal?
