remove the fill bolt and put your finger in the hole. The fluid should be at bolt hieght.

Check the figure shown in the "Lubricants and Liquids" section of your OM -- as Matt said, it should be up to the bottom of the fill plug treads.

When I last filled the gearbox, I swore the car was dead-level. I racked it a week later (It was level then!) and I pulled over a half quart out!

Hey Peter, i did not realize you owned a euro 308, is yours a GTS, mine is a 78 Euro GTS. i have synthetic fluid in the gearbox, i cannot remember what i used way back when. what are you using in there??? do you remember the allen wrench size for the inspection/fill hole?? thanks again. i have a jiffy lube nearby that lets me use their bay for alll my fluid changes - and they do not charge me for it - too cool, as long as i bring in my own fluids. i think they like the attraction my car draws while it is in the bay........

sounds like you've got bad shift shaft seals.
it allows motor oil into the tranny.
