Just wondered. No offense to anyone owning a Flying Mirror Testarrossa. It's still a great looking car, and each to his own also applies.

For me, mirror type wouldn't be a priority factor when buying a car, but I am wondering how happy I personally would be if the "right car" ended up with the flying mirror over my personal preference of normal mirrors.

So my questions I guess are:

    1) Is converting a big no no?

    2) Are there conversion kits out there?

    3) Are there REVERSIBLE conversions? (so that it could be put back to "factory condition" pre sale)

    4) Is there a bolt on Mirror option for the other side, to produce symmetry? (or is that another no no?)

    Thoughts?

As said, not a biggie and WHEN i get the right car, I'll be happy as Larry regardless of this small item. With my it's the same with 5 stud vrs single nut. Not a priority over presentation, maintenance, and engine/drive train condition.

I'd say answer #1. A big NO NO.
Chances are you will find a dual mirror car well before a single mirror version as they are outnumbered 6 to 1, so the odds are in your favor. Good luck with your search.

Flying mirror is something that is unique and gives the car more of a racer look, in the future like a split window vette this will add value.. Better to find a two mirror car.

    Dear Ferraristi,

No offense to my single mirror bro's....yes, it IS the Miami Vice car....

    BUT,

The later "duel mirror" cars came with a number of upgrades making it worth choosing over the "early" car if you plan to really use it as a daily driver.

I use my 91 Testarossa as an absolute daily driver. The MY 91 has anaerobic sealant throughout the engine....last upgrade and prevents leaks.

...oh, and series II front rotors.

thanks for all the replies guys.

Didnt realise that the single mirrors are so greatly out numbered in terms of production so that puts the odds in my favour anyway.

So I'll now just leave it as something I'll deal with if I have to ;)

I dare say, if I ended up with one, I'd probably end up loving it.

I had a single mirror TR and it looked way more exotic than the Civic-like later two mirror versions

    Dear Ferraristi,

    Bawhahahaha......you mean more F-40 like.

My duel mirror 91 Testarossa was built at the same time as the duel mirror F-40

...but hey....what did Enzo know anyway? :D

    lol you guys.

Tell you what, I think the high flying mirror would look awesome if it was on BOTH sides.

It's only the fact that it's on one side only that makes it "odd".

If it was on both, it would equal the "out there" design that is the rest of the car.

Many have mounted a RHD flying mirror on to a LHD car (or visa-versa) create dual flying mirror look. The car looks worse with two flying mirrors than with one (in my and many others opinions) and the second mirror is non-functional due to its location.

    Shamille,

I have owned 2 late TR's before the flying mirror car, and I didn't get half as many comments with the dual mirrors as I am getting with the single version. It's like it adds 50% more "exotic vibe" to the car. I would not trade my flying mirror car with anything else, besides, I hated that stupid US seatbelt mouse everytime I opened my door, what a pain that was. I love that fact that I have the original Testarossa and its simplicity is refreshing. Who needs mirrors anyway!!

I agree...the two mirror TR is the most exotic looking of the TR series

I owned an 86 flying mirror car, as well as an 86 with the second flying mirror added. I then bought a 90 which I sold a few years ago and I now own an 89. I've owned them all with all 3 mirror configurations. I prefer the two mirror car by far. The knock-off wheels on the earlier cars are also a pain in the ass and don't look as good IMO. That, with the other upgrades Shamile has mentioned, makes the later cars the only choice IMO. The later cars are just better.

    Dear Ferraristi,

Let's remember we're all Testarossa lovers here and no matter where the mirror is, the car is just the most exciting, over the top Ferrari design ever.

At least we all have one thing in common....we like our Testarossa's better than any 308...opps, I mean boxer. :D

The single mirror may be more exotic but the door don't go up....so no panties fall down...

....and that's what really counts anyway! :D

The original Flying Mirror, IMHO, is the standard for the TR/512 models regardless of year and upgrades. I can tune it myself and have the 'engine out' procedure down to 2 hrs w/ my tech's help. I truly love the car, as it's affordable, adaptable to upgraded electrical, ac & alt parts, and, in the words of one passing jogger, "Hey Barb, now that's a Ferrari"...but of course I love them all.

So true. It's been recommended to me that, for affordability of servicing reasons, I DONT buy a Testarossa, but buy a V8 Ferrari instead.

    A 328 was the recommendation. Or perhaps a 355.

With all due respect to those cars, my responce was simple.

"My dream isn't to own a Ferrari. it's to own a Testarossa"

Preference aside - putting a hi mirror on the right side of a left hand drive car leaves the right side mirror useless, the window post blocks your view of that mirror. Doing a low mirror conversion on a high mirror car is a lot of parts or a lot of work. The doors are different as well as all the window frame assembly. I have made the conversion by fabricating a new bracket and panel for the mirrors to attach to in place of the small triangle shaped glass on the door and it worked out fine. The 'stiffness' of the mount was not as good as the factory low mount but function was good. Then you have the problem of wiring the electric mirror adjustment into a car that did not intend this for both sides, the drivers side was no trouble but the passenger side is a big deal. And then try to go out and find a pair of those mirrors.....if you do find them you will pay a fortune. At the end of the day, regardless of the 'should or should not' debate it is a modification not easily achieved.

After you convert to the the dual mirror, I thing you should put some 22" rims on that biotch! Maybe some of those ones with the dollar bill signs in them.............

Of course if you put a premium on asthetics and raw driving experience you might view things in reverse, the testarossa has far better Ac though. Had one of those pop up door countaches once, pure art, terrible car,

I was first considering an early 87 for the dual mirrors and single bolt wheels.

That car was roundly proclaimed to be a "parts car" by most everyone here after I posted details of the PPI.

Ended up with a single mirror 86, and am glad I did. No intention of changing the mirrors, and I'm glad I don't have to put up with the mouse belts. Like the unique looks better, too.

Remember, a lot of cars when some of us learned to drive in the 60s did not have mirrors on both sides either. You can always look back over your shoulder.

    Yes it does +1

James thanks for chiming in. I had originally talked to James about the conversion but
I changed my mind and now like the single mirror better. So just wait long enough and
you may change your mind as well. Keep it the way it came is my vote.
