I'm doing a two day at Laguna Seca with Skip and i'd like to bring my own helmet. Has anyone had any security issues bringing a bagged helmet and suit as a carry on these days aboard a domestic flight? I'm flying American and I'd hate to get all the way to the metal detector before I'm told the helmet needs to be checked.

I've never had a problem. I'd leave the suit behind though, just use the skippy suits. They're fine and you don't have to clean yours afterwards. If you are only bringing carryon then wow a suit is bulky and takes up lots of space.

Call the airline and ask them. Seems like policies change on a weekly basis.

Bring your suit! The SB suits are old and heavy and hot!

I have traveled with my helmet, Nomex suit, shoes, gloves, etc all carried on, around 6 times in 2010, no problems. A few years back I had someone try to check my helmet, no matter what do NOT let them!

I've never had a problem. It's most fun seeing your helmet go through the xray machine and checking out all the wiring and hardware.

    Do not check your helmet!

I carry on my rally helmet. I like to put it on just before takeoff to watch the reaction of the other passengers. "What? You didn't get a helmet?"

Then, pretend to be talking to pilot thru the boom mic. "What do you mean we don't have enough fuel?"

Security gives me more grief about carrying on my parachute.

I always travel with my helmet as a carry on bag and never check it in. This has led to some interesting security inspections but it has never amounted to more than a visual inspection. Helmets wired up for radios tend to look like those Loony Toons bombs in the X-Ray.

Never had a problem and flew to various venues with it in a helmet bag...shouldn't be an issue.

When I flew out to Milwaukee en route to Road America a couple of years ago with my helmet bag (& Nomex suit in my carry-on bag) no one said a word, but I did get an odd look from the guy at the rental car counter when I put the helmet bag up there while picking up a car and asked him how far it was to Elkhart Lake. Guess he was wondering what sort of shape the car would be in when I returned it . . .

    Jackass the Movie!

If you haven't watched it, the first bit with a rental car is a riot!
