In the middle of my clutch replacement, I realized my flywheel needs to be resurfaced. I'm planning on replacing my flywheel bolts when I put the flywheel back on.

    Questions:

    1) I've always been told to replace flywheel bolts. How necessary is this?
    2) The bolt head has "R12" and four lines (like a pyramid). I'm not familiar with this designation on a bolt. Can I just use a class 8.8 bolt from a local fastener shop? I believe they are 10x1.25x25.

I think those marks indicate that the bolts are grade 5 bolts (commonly available) but I've never heard of replacing them.

Reuse the old bolts. No one replaces them and you will be sure they are the correct ones..

Ok, good to know. Somehow I remember a voice from my early wrenching years to always replace the bolts, but I'm good with reusing as long as it's safe.

btw, here are the markings on the bolt head.
