    Hi folks,

My car's in the shop getting new plug wires, injectors, etc. One thing we noticed was that my passenger side air intake (that runs along the door, goes into the engine, and eventually feeds the air cleaner) has a strange "ear" of black rubber-like foam sticking out and slightly obscuring the intake. Officially, this is the "right hand air duct" in the parts manual, but I don't see a foam piece separately listed.

Anybody ever seen anything like this?

I'm not sure when they started switched the air intake from fiberglass to a "foam".. but I think you're referring to the air intake. My '86 328 doesn't have that but when purchasing a new rubber baffle for the air intake box I called FOD, and initially they thought I meant the foam which is NLA.. there are posts concerning various alternatives.

    Hi Ken,

Hmm, above thread doesn't seem to relate to my issue?

I'm talking about the "Strake" on the 328's body (on the doors) that "scoops" air into the engine. (The "air intake".)

    Thanks!

Hey Mike! Thanks for the help on this... Yeah, the rubber baffle is that black piece of rubber with the tall "Ridges" connecting to the airbox, right? This isn't that...

So FOD thought you were talking about what I am talking about, but you in fact were talking about something else? (Do I have it right?)

Can ya point me in the right direction w/ some threads? My searching isn't bearing many useful threads.

Is said ear in the lower outboard side of the duct?

It appears to be on the mid-to lower INSIDE WALL of the passenger side air intake / duct. But it's sticking out pretty far, almost to the "center" of the cylindrical tunnel.

I can't be sure, this is coming from memory (car is at Dave Helms' shop now for injectors + plug wires).

Whoops! Obviously I didn't read your question thoroughly. Sorry about the misdirection there. I'm curious to learn more about this. The only thing I can think of relating to your problem is the tube going from the inlet to the airbox. There have been several threads concerning the foam of these inlet tubes disintegrating and clogging up the airbox; I have personal experience with that, but in my case the particles were very fine and granular. I'm wondering whether your issue might be a larger piece of this disintegrated foam?

That scoop ends in a rubber gasket surround similar to a door weatherstrip, and it may have a mounting tang of some sort on the end....sonuds like yours has slipped a little from proper location...

I'm sure Dave will sort it out by remounting, have him make some hardware cloth mesh screens while he's in there....it's a euro look!!! LOL!

    German only actually, but WHATEVER!!!!!!

I saw those mesh screens in the parts manual!!! Nice! I was wondering why I didn't have 'em. Ok, so they're not US Spec. What's the deal, little 1cm flying critters on the autobahn or what?

I have them in #22127, delivered into Canada...so go figure!

My MIL noticed them absent from #20405 and asked me to add them! LOL!

They help with seagulls on those surf runs early in the AM........Ricambi or someone posted a pic of the part...recently.

It's not to keep little birds from getting sucked in, but the German TUV maybe was concerned that when passing a pedestrian at (too) close distance an arm might get caught in there. And ripped off. However if that ever really happened on unprotected cars I'm sure we had read about it right here on this site. Not?
