Anyone know of where to obtain a fog lamp assemby for a 328? Please contact:[email protected] Thanks so much
Time to bend over. If you get some lenses, put some lens protector sheets on them so they don't break. They are worth about 10% of the value of the car.
Verell, Any luck with the 'sacrificial' lens I sent you about a year ago? I remember you were looking to the possibility of fabricating new lenses but had difficulty detaching the front glass from the rear casing. Any updates from 'our hero at Unobtanium Supply?' Thanks, Vincent
Perfect quality plastic reproductions are already being made and will be available in a few days. If someone is going to the trouble, make something different....like GTS top header rubber.
I've got one and have bids for repro. Problem is, the 308/328 market won't be willing the pay the price for a proper repro. I have shelved the project (and my spare gaskets) until I can find a suitable mfg. The foam blocks fused at the ends of extruded gasket are not as simple as they might appear.
I bought one of the last ones from T Rutlands about 6 years ago for $450 for my old 328, good deal for what is was complete assy with new turn signal lens as well. One good rock they'll shatter plastic flim on them or not
How much are you talking for a reproduction? I've had 2 people each offer me $800+ for an NOS gasket I picked up at the dealer 2 years ago.
If I needed one I would pay that but I am sure Daniel will agree on this, the list of people that would write a check for that is in reality a short one.
Perhaps a really big rock, but not from most stones. I have used stongard on my three Ferraris and various daily drivers, and only lost one fog light on my BMW. The rock caught right on the very edge where the plastic stopped and there was a tiny bit of exposed glass. And I drive over several passes each year with a lot of large bits of sand and gravel used for traction. This plastic is several mils thick, it is not the same as what is used on painted surfaces. I replaced the fog light and used a film with better coverage. The stuff works when it covers all the glass. I can even see the nicks in the plastic from where some pretty good hits were deflected off my headlights and fog lights.
The only thing worth buying from Griot's garage is the lens film. so, that is where you go. That film stuff has protected my BMW fog lenses for a few months now. Before, it would take a week to break a lens ... so it works.
I bought 40 mil clear film from Lamin-x: http://www.lamin-x.com/gloss-thick-a/142.htm It was less expensive than the stuff from Griot's and it was pretty easy to cut to fit. No one makes pieces pre-cut to the correct size anyway. Once it's installed and properly trimmed you have to look very closely to even tell it's on the lamp. Regarding the repop targa gasket, I'm sure the line at $800 would be short, but would a repop cost that much? I bet at $400 they would sell a lot better.
Brian, is this something other than Superperformance lenses? Sign me up if so. I would get the Superperformace ones, if there was a easier way to swap the lens. It seems that removing the old lens is the "sticking" point.
As Brian suggests, I've been waiting to see if the superformance repros fill the need, would like to hear from someone who's bought them. Also, I'm in the process of getting my CNC mill operational which will let me carve molds from CAD drawings for things like this.
I find myself looking for these lenses as well today. I didn't see the repro's on Superperformance, but I found some on Eurospares: http://www.eurospares.co.uk/partsListing.asp?M=1&Mo=664&A=2&B=38993&S=&ID4=1577361 What's the story on these? Or are the one's Brian referring to available yet?
Those appear to be the turn signal lenses, not the fog light. You can get the turn signal lenses from Ricambi.
Ahh, OK, I was assuming the turn signal lenses were part of the entire fog lamp assembly. Yes, I just need the orange lenses. I have 40 mil Laminix over the glass fog lamps, but it was too thick for the poly turn signal lenses. I was planning on getting thinner Laminix for the poly lenses, but just hadn't done it yet and I just found a hole/crack in the right hand lens. Procrastination bites again.
