I went ahead and created a FerrariChat team. The team number is 45428. I'll be making a tutorial right when I get back from Wal Mart I'll be creating other teams as well, so watch out! Happy crunching. Here is the link to download the client. http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/folding/download.html
Folding @ Home has been integrated into the google toolbar, if you don't want to install the Folding client. http://toolbar.google.com/dc/offerdc.html
I already created it I'm pretty sure the client is multi-threaded, I'll give it a double check, but yeah, multiple home threads work fantastic. I used to do that for United Devices before they got taken over with other crap. NooO!! That's a completley differen't team! Ferrarichat's team number is 45428 Repeat that! 45428 45428 45428 45428 ! Dont get it confused, otherwise we won't know! http://vspx27.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teampage&teamnum=45428 That's the link to our team stats!
Here is the tutorial. I had typed up something nice but my computer crashed. If you have any questions, e-mail me or PM me. First thing we need to do is download the installation file. You can do that by going to this link http://folding.stanford.edu/download.html And find your operating systems link. As a quickie, if you use Windows XP and you are not the best at comptuers, I suggest you download at this link. http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/release/[email protected] Then run the program and install it. Use all the default settings until you get the the screen that has two options. 1) Run Installed Application (or something like that) 2) Read the readme. There should be a filled in checkbox next to each one. Uncheck the one next to the second option (the readme) and press Finish or Next, whatever it says. Then another page should come up that looks like the attached picture. You'll want to put in your FerrariChat username instead of vraa, and instead of 0 put in 45428 so that FerrariChat gets the credit. You can check the other tabs for different options, but the stuff we have put in right now are pretty good. After you press okay, it'll look like the screen disappears. Just go to your taskbar, and you'll see a red flower thingy. Double click that, and a really cool screen will come up. That's the proteins being downloaded and processed. Mine. Team 355 is Origami Lifeguards. Team 45428 is FerrariChat http://vspx27.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teampage&teamnum=45428 http://vspx27.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teampage&teamnum=355 See?
It's team 45428!!! vraa beat me to the punch, and I didn't folow protocol anyway. Threading does 'sorta' work. If you create multiple directories and change the hardcoded 'machine id' in the client. It's just not very good (and will only work up to 8 instances, after that you need scripting to remove garbage from /tmp).
Well if you're running Linux, scripting should be easy anyways, you could create a cron job I'm going to go through the Stanford forums to see what they say about smp's.
http://forum.folding-community.org/viewtopic.php?t=7356&highlight=smp http://forum.folding-community.org/viewtopic.php?t=3752&highlight=smp Check that out if you're having trouble. Those two threads should be pretty much sufficent.
Here's a linux FAQ if you are running more than 1 proc. http://fahwiki.fahstats.com/index.php?title=The_FAH_client_on_Linux
I'll copy it out straight from the front of the F@H site. Basically what we're trying to do, is help them out. Folding @ Home is a massive distributed computing project spread throughout many countries in the world on millions of computers rather then having just one big computer do it. Anways, that one big computer could never have the processing power of what we're doing with distributed computing, and it's far cheaper to do it by using distributed computing. Here's another one from the front page.
glad somebody put it in terms i could understand ... ... i had no freaking clue what the hell you guys were typing about
oh' shi=t thats pretty cool, but i'm to dumb to figure out how in the hell my computer will help. oh' well, I'll read on... thanks for clearing it up Ben
So I assume it'll take about a week for the stats to really get updated.
