Couple of questions for those of you who have had your heads pulled and guides replaced.

Did you find a superior aftermarket guide that is supposed to last a long time, or did you use an OEM replacement? How is the job holding up so far? Are you assuming this to be a permanent fix, or could this issue come up again in the next few years? Any repeat offenders?

Some independent Ferrari mechanics could answer that alot better than the owners..

Norwood Performance, a f/chat sponsor, installed Ferrari guides, which are out of different material than the originals. 2 years, and 5,000 miles later, it runs perfectly, and no issues. Call Mike of James there to find out what the material is.

I will do the guides on my 95 355 w/ 26K mi. next year, as well as replacing the stock headers. I have read as many threads I can find on valve-guide replacement prior to my recent purchase, but I couldn't find a definitive answer as to what the best material is to use. I remember something about some type of crazy complex alloy, but I can't find the thread anymore. This is a great thread, and I'm curious to see what develops!

Originals were brass, replacements from dealer I believe are steel sintered.

At 10,000 miles engine runs perfectly when not being turned off by faulty Slow Down light reading.

Down the street from my office is the PEP valve train manufacturing and sales facility here in Las Vegas. I stopped by the other day and chatted it up with one of the reps there specifically regarding the 355 valve guide issue. I was advised they can manufacture a superior valve guide for about $7 or $8 a pop. I cannot recall the material they make them out of, but I was advised they are by far the best in the business by a couple different sources (not Ferrari people though).

There is no sense in using inferior components that might fail again, so why not take matters into our own hands. If Ferrari or whoever has come up with a long-term solution, I may be wasting my breath here, but heck, you can't beat less than $10 a guide.

I do not have a TIN so cannot order anything from them, but someone else might be able to use this resource. The rep I spoke with req I send in a guide and they will manufacture it.
