Constant coding wasn't a mark of honor -- it was a necessity to meet client deadlines in a go-go economy that had absolutely zero limits on technology expense, and zero tolerance for missing go-live dates. I suspect times have changed -- but in the code-crazy world when I was involved, the pay was extremely good, the camaraderie was great, and the sense of accomplishment was profound.
