Unless the V12 literally exploded, there is absolutely no excuse for putting in a SBC with auto tranny. I'm not an insane purist by any stretch, but c'mon, if you want an automatic SBC-powered touring car, buy a freaking Camaro and leave the 250GTE as is.

Even if the V12 literally exploded I would take a go at it with a blow torch, some super glue, duct tape, anything before throwing in a small block Chevy.

If it were a 1975, i would buy it now.
But, a 1976 would require smog equipment in California.

Don't forget ENGINE. Ouch. I just HATE THIS STUFF. Why do people do these
sorts of things to cars like this? Not that the GT4 is my fave... it's not. But it's
a FERRARI for heaven's sake. Ugh.

456 or 550 engines can be hand these days as can 400 or 412 engines. If theprice is right on the roller, sell the chevy engine and have a nice car. The 400s had a GM auto trans fitted so so a GM sdt trans would bolt right on for very little money.

At 38k, it's gonna be cheaper to buy an already done 250GTE than try and put that one back together (unless you have a spare V12 laying around).

Not that I know much about GTEs, but I do know that they go for somewhere around $100k, and that you can probably get a real Ferrari V12 and tranny for somewhere south of $20k. That leaves a lot of money left in the kitty to get it in there.

If it were me I would go with a 400 motor, but with some Webers. You would have one hell of cruiser on your hands that would retain the vintage Ferrari look with the engine lid open.

edited to add that I just checked out Ferrari Parts Exchange, and low and behold they have a '63 GTE motor for $23k......perhaps it is the 'missing' motor.

How much IS an already done 250GTE? That one did look sweet, of course, I HATE the engine/tranny swap.
