So anyway I am listening to PF again and "On the Turning Away" is playing and it gets to the guitar solo which is a very very moving solo for me. So anywho I decide to look for this solo's on YT and yes I find a few but most strike me odd so.....

What I see is alot of either trained or "I can read music" interpretations, nothing wrong with that but no emotion. That being said I have no formal training and have always just simply played by ear ie finding the note/tone etc etc on the fret board even being WAY out of tune (old strings and such).

Do you find that playing by feel and emotion is more enjoyable like your fingers just know where to go? My meaning and intent is rather difficult to put into words so I apologize for that up front.

    Gregg,

I'm not a guitar *player*, but I do have one that I play *with* - a subtle, but important, difference.

I think, speaking as a listener who would love to play (had I had more talent), emotion and "heart and soul" will win out every time. Gilmour is phenomenal that way, as is Alex Lifeson of Rush (hear solo in "Ghost of a Chance" for example - he's very under-rated).

Guys like Dream Theater are phenomenal "technicians" of music, but I don't find them to be quite as strong "musicians" - they seem to lack the heart and soul of guys like Gilmour or Rush.

    FWIW.

John Pettruci of Dream theater is an amazing guitarist..YouTube Glasgo Kiss, the live performance..simpley amazing mix of feel and shred..

I used to play everyday for hours on end, but not so much anymore unfortunatly. Feel is always they way I try to play. Note for note learning if fine, but change it up a bit once you learn the basics of the solo/tune you are playing. Make it your own!! I really have to start playing again, its one of the best stress releivers I know

    Amen.

For the record and my apology for not mentioning it is that I am just referring to "non pro's" and more towards home musicians. One of these days I should really take some professional lessons just for the knowledge. A guy who grewup in my neighbor, was a year behind me, became from what I heard one of the youngest and best classical guitarist by like 18-19yrs of age and he probably still has his school.

Lifes priority's just seem to make us forget certain aspects/joys. My next guitar will not be Mexican or Japanese Strat but a US version built to Gilmours specs which are somewhere online.
