I'm still here and will stay. So what is there to do? Here is a list to start: The Daily Grind coffeehouse/restaurant on Washington in Midtown intends to stay open through the hurracane. I went there for breakfast yesterday and today. Met a patron who said everything in Rice Village area is closed. He said Kenneallys bar on Shepard was open last night and still serving pizza. I am going there tonight. I went to Rudyard's on Waugh in Montrose last night. Kitchen was closed. Bar should be open tonight also. Jimmie's Ice in the Heights will stay open rain or shine. Address is Studemont and White Oak (6th St.) I had cold Shiner Bocks last night there last night too. Family owned liquor stores in the Heights are still open. This town is totally dead, very little traffic on the streets. The weather is still nice though. I just finished mowing my lawn. More later. If anyone knows of any bars and restaurants that will stay open, please post.
I just went on a long bike ride and took some pics, ill post em in a little. Winds are just now picking up..
that reminds me, on my bike ride i've seen one guy watering his grass and another guy blowing leaves off his driveway, now thats irony, lol...
Just had a bacon cheeseburger at Cosmos Cafe on Heights Blvd and Washington. I think it is only place left serving food besides the Daily Grind on this side of town. The proprietor at Cosmos said they will stay open into the night. All grocery stores have been closed since yesterday afternoon. There is no gasoline to be had anywhere in Houston. This city had completely shut down. There are lots of cops patrolling. There are a few conviniece stores open here and there. It is still partly cloudy but darker clouds are starting to roll in.
Correction to my first post. Kenneally's pub will be closed tonight but Cahills on Durham St. south of Washington will be open but the kitchen is closed. What handfull of bars are open seem to be doing well. The wind is starting to pick up and the clouds are coming from the north. The big swirling motion has started. BTW,where is the "edit" button? The FAQ says there should be one on each post.
As happy as I am we're not getting a direct hit, is anyone sorta unhappy it appears we're not gonna get much of nothing? I mean it's great we're not, but after all of this work my dad and I've put in the last few days I hope we at least get some rain out of this.
The roads are empty. Their is not much going on. The wind is beginning to pick up. Almost everything is closed. I found a private supermarket that was open yesterday. This was probably the last supermarket that was open in Houston. They were still letting people in, 15 minutes past their closing time. The place was like a zoo.
Had another burger at Cosmos around 8pm. One of the last ones. They still have steaks. The place looked like an HPD substation. We now have a little rain coming down. The strong winds haven't hit yet. Probably around midnight or so. Beaumont and Port Author are gonna take the hit. Exxon-Mobil has a massive refinery in Beaumont. There are others also in Port Author. If those go down, prepare for $5-$6 gallon gasoline. The refineries in Chalmette and St. Charles, LA are still down from Katrina. http://www.forbes.com/business/services/feeds/ap/2005/09/22/ap2240400.html The Houston area should come through OK with all this. The northeast quadrant of the hurracane is the worst. Luckily we are on the other side. I will be heading back to Jimmie's Ice House for more Shiner Bocks.
dude, you have an empty city. Go out and drive like a crazy a$$!!!!! Do eveything you could ever have dreamed of. I go out early, thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter morn when nobodys out and it's great! But you have absolutly nobody to stop you, you have the city as your own personal race track!!!!!! hope ya horded some gas
Where is this place? We are holed up since Katrina on W Alabama just inside the loop. I can spit on the Galleria from our apartment. Nothing is open around here. We spent the ENTIRE day fighting off cabin fever. (It is good baby-making weather though!!) We found THE LAST open Quizno's on Richmond near Westlake last night, and that was it. I'd kill for a gigante fajita burrito from Taco Cabanna right now!!! Dave previously of Nawlins, now an honorary Houstonian
I'm so bored. According to the radar, this thing should have at least brought some high winds by now. I've barely got a drizzle and every so often the trees rustle a bit but nothing major. I'm glad we're not getting pounded like was predicted a few days ago, but I'm already getting a little cabin fever.
Yes it is pretty mild so far. The roads are wet. You cannot haul a**. Of course you do not have to wait very long at a stoplight. True about Cosmos. I drove by their a few hours ago. I am not far from there. Their was a bunch of white cars with blue letters. Cosmos is at Heights Blvd and Washington. It is just north of Washington. It is just west (about three miles) of downtown. Taco Cabanna ? Forget it. No beignets either. You can find a Hurricaine though. Not the same from Pat O's !!
I just got off the phone with my sister in Bellaire, so far she lost power but it's fickering on & off. She also added that they got very little rain, just some high winds that took out a couple of small plants. So they are safe for now. (whew) Getting back into Houston for everyone else is going to be another problem all it's own.
Nothing really major up in The Woodlands. Very little rain and a few gusts up to maybe 30-40mph. The news is saying we're about to get another band.
Our power has flickered on/off a few times. There is a slight drizzle, and worst of all, there are 10-15 leaves blown into the pool! Also there maybe a few twigs in the parking lot. I'm sure glad I didn't spend 24 hours on the road going up to Waterwood. They are getting HAMMERED big time. No power, and 100 + mph winds off of Lake Livingston.... Dave
BTW, anybody know where there is gas? I was supposed to head back to Nawlins tomorrow to go bAck to work, but 1/2 tank ain't gonna cut it. Dave
I found this on another forum Keep in mind this is in west Houston, about 15 minutes from where your at. Good luck Dave. Westheimer Report (Food, Gas, Liquor) Little Nipolis - Voss and Westheimer Wings n Things - Voss and Westheimer HEB Kirkwood and Westheimer, they have gas also Specs on Westheimer before Dunvale Sholatskis Deli on Briar Forest and Westheimer Papas Liquor Fondron and Westheimer
Thanks. We just took a ride around and every gas station open (mostly shells on 59) had 100-150 cars in line. I don't need gas that bad. I'll be here for a while since I-10 east is closed at Lake Charles. Guess I'll have to cancel my plane tickets. I was supposed to be home by now and flying back next weekend for my birthday. Gonna keep my 'Stros/Cubs tix though! Dave
My electricity was knocked out about 2AM Saturday. My area just got power a few hours ago and there are crews a few blocks away working on the lines. More businesses are opening up. No grocery stores open yet in my area, but independent convinience stores are open. There are place to eat at the intersection of 11th St. and Studemont in the Heights. Onion Creek on Whit Oak (6th St.) is open for coffees, beer and wine. Kitchen was closed last night though. Papa Johns pizza on 11th and Durham opened yesterday and there was a TV crew filming. People were lined up for takeout. There is only one place I know of selling gasoline and the lines were really long. For those people that left, it is going to be gridlock on the highways when they come back.
