    wow...I think I'm in love...

and ya, $200K US is about what it would cost to do one of these, from scratch, tip to tail...but the mousehair looks original (faded), rather than redone...

and while everything is not 'correct', it's absolutely beautiful, regardless.

a steal (beyond ridiculous) at the auction estimate.

This is the car that was on ebay last year. I went to see the car as it was only 20 miles away and it was very nice indeed but not road legal so couldn't be test driven.

The guy selling the car wasn't interested in selling for less than £30k which was too much considering the car hadn't really been used for around 8 years so is bound to have needed some recommissioning.

I decided to bid anyway so placed a max bid of £20k and ended up as the high bidder at just below £13k - obviously the reserve wasn't met even at £20k.

A while later on I found the navy 365 I now own but whilst en route to buy it I phoned the guy with the silver car in a last ditch effort to buy it. He said he'd take £25k but that was £4k more than I agreed to pay for the navy car and to me £4k would cover the costs to bring the navy car up to spec. (I'd already test driven it so knew it was a good car).

We ended the conversation on good terms and I then went on to buy the navy car. So far I've spent about £2.5k on it inc. paint and cooling system overhaul and it's pretty much there except for an engine service and brake overhaul.

One of my friends then told me he'd seen the car advertised and had been haggling with the owner at around £23k but really wanted to pay £20k so didn't buy it (he isn't a 365/400/412 series lover - just a guy who fancied buying a toy of some kind).

Overall it's a very nice looking car - not perfect but very nice. I'm not sure how it drove as I never got that far which is a shame.

Did I make the right decision ? Only time will tell !!

    Russ, All,

I too have spoken with the chap that owns the car when it was on eBay last year.

Albeit the pics of the car were taken in a street in some southern suburb, the detail on the expense to this vehicle was not disclosed at this time.

It was not road legal then as you have mentioned and I could not move it for the sanity of gearbox and clutch ok check, so I gave it a miss.

Proves now the 30k or thereabouts he wanted/ wants rings true, however no one can move it themselves, and an auction is a fabulous place to alleviate potential purchasers doing exactly that! Although I guess it is gleaming, and the reason I settled for my red 400i.....provenance and ability to drive it....

It will be very interesting to see where this one ends up price wise at auction.

Looks like a nice car but goodness knows what all that money was spent on...

Also, wondering whether it drives and whether the mileage is genuine
(and even if so, why so low?)

Considering that I tried to buy this car this comment is more an observation than a criticism.

If I'd spent £137k having a car restored I'd be pretty pissed if the drivers door didn't fit properly !!

And the 'under stress' mounting of a square rear number plate against the rear panel is not something I can quite enjoy looking at as the rest of it looks in good nick....

The rear bumper is super-shiny - too much so. Also, the back inset is gloss black. I thought all 365/400s were flat black there.

Nice looking car, not their best colour (my opinion) and headers look rusty so not SS, so much for the full SS exhaust. What else is not really as stated?
I don't buy at auctions so I am not interested.

i believe i misunderstood the description a bit...

"We are informed by the vendor that this cars service history tells the story of huge chunks of money spent: 19K here, 16k there, plus more frequent wads of £5000 per time than any other service history you will have ever seen. There is a detailed almost fanatical history file to this car with bills for restoration of an incredible £137069.20, all from a classic car specialist who rebuilt this car over a period of three years from 1993 to 1996 and involved bodywork, trim and engine rebuild. The car subsequently came third in class at the 1996 Ferrari Owners Club concours competition event, of which there is obviously supporting documentation."

as i thought the bills totaling 137GBP were spent over the cars lifespan...which is realistic for a nearly 40 year old V-12 Ferrari...19K here, 16K there, paint job, leather, etc.

however, it says that it was spent during '93-96, which does raise some questions about what was done only 10 years ago...particularly if it's seen very little action since.

regardless, if the lions share of the work could be verified (motor rebuild, gearbox, etc.) then car would be very, very well bought at the auction estimate.

it is, afterall, only a matter time before they 'move'...and you'd be hard pressed to buy a 'beater' and make it look like that for double the money...it's that simple.

Did anyone make it to the auction to view this car in the flesh?
