My doctor told me the two most destructive things to American health are alcohol and cigarette smoking. Even Mick Jagger supposedly quit drinking.

Ask your doctor about the positive effects of a single glass of wine in relation to heart disease and see what he says. You might be pleasantly surprised. Binging and using something in excess, even if its good for you can have negative effects, so lets try to keep things within context and not assume if you drink you binge, and if you smoke, you chain smoke.

Ehh. I'm still skeptical about that. Even though there is a correlation between two things it does not mean that there is a cause/effect relationship. There is no way we could determine this unless there is an experiment that has been done - and in this case that would be a monstrous task. Confounding variables as well as the sheer time needed for completion (not to mention the ethics) will plague such an experiment.

Doctors can be just as susceptible to fads as the general population.

I agree that people can bve susceptible to fads. Here is a homework assignment for you.

    Go to: www.google.com
Type in: is wine good for you

This will get you started: http://www.genesiscenter.com/french_paradox.htm

So, if you're a total non drinker and you might be obese and at risk for heart disease, I warned ya!

My doctor was referring to abuse, for sure. A glass or two of wine a day, if that's what is really happening, would probably extend a person's life (assuming the person is not alcoholic).

Native American religion apparently has made tobacco smoke a very respectible thing, but that is not even an every day use.

Time to start believing. 2 glasses of red wine (some studies say any type of alcohol for that matter) help protect vs stroke and MI although there is a bit difference in the effect between the sexes (helps with strokes in men, MIs in women, or the other way around). I doubt any doc would argue against that.

    Beyond 2 glasses is detrimental.

Of course they decide all this soon after I quit drinking. Wouldn't you know.
