A couple of weeks back I took this rolling-lap photo at the Skagit Raceway in WA: a 3/10 mile clay-silica track (lap record 10.8 secs, 99mph).

Sometimes these cars in formation are truly beautiful -- then they drop the hammer and all hell breaks loose.

In the 360cu.in. Sprint main, a kid who'd just turned 15, in only his fourth time in the car, ran away from the field and took the trophy. Twenty-two years previously at the same track I had watched his then-teenage father do the same thing. You know, spending Saturday nights at these North American bullrings is not a bad way for a kid to grow up.
