FYI- Most everyone has heard about the Gathering of Ferraris car show at the Circle on Friday evening during the USGP, but did you know that there are usually a couple of Ferrari Formula 1 cars on display too? You can get up close and personal. ;)

Yup. One year at the end of the show I got a chance to help push the F1 car back into the transporter. :)

I was at the show in 2004 and it was great!! Anyone know what time this year's show ends at Monument Circle? My flight gets in around 8:00pm.
    Thanks

Was it a static model, spare car, or (gulp): the real deal? :D

The real deal, apparently out of the Brickyard Museum. The car was on display at the Bridgestone preparty last weekend, though and not at the Gathering and in Cali or something this year. :(

The cockpit in that pic looks fake. Especially the wheel.

    Got any more photos?

The "real deals" are at the Galleria in Maranello or at the Corse Cliente building in Maranello.

It's a tough choice for me. The Williams looks good, but so does the McMerc. I wonder if McLaren still sells the rolling chassis once the season ends. There was a 1999 MP4-14 rolling chassis show car (real CF, no fiberglass) for sale in Scotland a couple years ago on RaceCarsDirect for 20,000 GBP.

They're show cars. Special built for occasions like, well, sitting on display during GP weekends. No engine, drivetrain, and even the steering wheels are fake.

I would think so. Just letting a $60,000 steering wheel be that close to a bunch of fans like that would be very stupid.

...and I'm pretty sure they didn't get a tip. I watched the whole process and I saw no tip given.

I dunno about the McLaren being fake. The reason we went down that direction in the first place was the engine sounds

I don't think Tony George buys fake cars any more than he is likely to buy a fake Rolex. It wouldn't be in the IMS Museum if it was a fake, no way. I can't believe that. And that was no mocked up steering wheel either. I saw the car on another occasion where it was billed as a 'championship winning' car too, when the F1 season ticket holders were invited to the track for a photo session with the car the following season. I could be wrong, but I don't think the IMS Ferrari is a mock up.

No mention of the F1 car on the website, but here is a taste of the quality of the Museum display, and there are huge underground areas filled with cars that the public never sees.:

Approximately 75 vehicles are on display at all times, and among the featured attractions are:

The Louis Chevrolet Memorial, featuring a bronze bust of Chevrolet with four bronze panels about his automotive accomplishments.
The Marmon "Wasp," which won the inaugural Indianapolis 500 in 1911 with Ray Harroun at the wheel, and was featured on a postage stamp in the U.S. Postal Service's Transportation Series.
Four two-time winning cars: the Boyle Maserati (Wilbur Shaw 1939-40), the Blue Crown Spark Plug Special (Mauri Rose 1947-48), the Fuel Injection Special (Bill Vukovich 1953-54) and the Belond Special (Sam Hanks 1957 and Jimmy Bryan 1958).
More than 30 Indianapolis 500-winning cars.
The four cars driven to victory by A.J. Foyt Jr., including his 1977 machine that represents his record-setting fourth Indy 500 win.
The Duesenberg #12 Murphy Special, the only car ever to win both the Indianapolis 500 (1922) and the French Grand Prix at Le Mans (1921).
Dave Evans' #8 Cummins Diesel Special, the first car to complete the Indy 500 without a pit stop in 1931.
    The 1965 Le Mans-winning Ferrari 250 LM.
    A 1954/55 Mercedes-Benz Formula One car.
    A 1957 SSI Corvette.
    A 1998 Stewart-Ford SF-2 Formula One car.
A rare 1935 Duesenberg Model JN four-door convertible passenger car, of which only three were built.
An equally rare 1925 McFarlan TV6 passenger roadster.

(Not too many fakes in that list.)
