    Hi All,

Just watching the F1 and wondering, do the race cars have similar technology that's filtered down to the ferrari road cars. Are the older F1 boxes with the manual clutch more similar to the race cars?
I've read that the new dual clutch boxes would be too heavy in F1 cars, so are the older F1 boxes like those in the F355 and 360 more in line with the race cars?

    Any engineers with insight?
    Cheers.

To my knowledge it is a single plate clutch vs a dual clutch in our new more modern DCT that we all know and love now.

The F1 cars have straight cut gears vs helical cut which can't be integrated into street cars and use dog rings to essentially time and slam the shift instantly vs interruption of a clutch pack to get the timing or spin up the synchro.

If you have ever listened to race car footage you will have hear a high pitch wind that seems to go on and on and higher pitches as the speed increases. Helical cut gets rid of the whine

F1 clutch has a carbon triple plate clutch similar to my F430's twin plate clutch but very lightweight and very small in diameter.
As above with straight cut gears and dog engagement. (no synchros)
Can be used on the street if you can handle the whine and the bangs of the gear changes. I've been in a V8 race car and you cant hear the engine for the whine of the straight cut gears.
Also clutch is only used for take offs and no clutch pedal, all on the steering wheel.

Recommend checking out Scott Mansell's Driver61 podcast "What’s Inside an F1 Gearbox (and How it Works)." Very well done. (No relation to Nigel.)

Amazingly, in the 80s and early 90s, F1 cars did not have sequential gearboxes (as found on motorbikes and many race cars).
So I guess that the first Ferrari F1 gearboxes on their F1 cars was very similar in implementation to what later appeared as the F1 gearboxes on the F355 and up to the F430.
Now (but I don't really know since when), as far as I understand, F1 cars (as well as lower formulas cars) use real sequential gearboxes, with one single clutch; the dual clutch implementation for the road cars is like having two sequential gearboxes (although they're sharing the main shaft), one for even gears and one for odd gears, which - with the two clutches and the way to switch from one to the other - obviously adds weight.

I think the answer is no, the modern f-1 gear box has gears... that is about it in relation to any road cars. as noted above all correct. straight cut gears, and also the HKers/ Regenerative aspect is also in the gear box... what ever they call it now. G and H motor generators... all feed off and onto the gearbox. The cars are now started on track using the battery and gearbox to turn over the engine..... A modern gear box is so tiny its hard to believe it can handle 1000+ HP. plus its all Carbon etc... who knows what exotics are in side the weave...

F-1 cars in the 80's all had "dog Boxes" like a regular road car.... but finely tunned. clutch pedal was minimal... and going up the box most drivers did not use the clutch...some not going down either... when Ferrari came out with the Paddle Shift box, it was a standard F1 gear box, with an electro hydraulic shift mechanism ... the driver had to match revs... and in mid 89 they had updated that did that for the drivers as well... most of the early issues were electrical related to vibration on the alternator belt ...

Racing car gears are similar to M/C, with dogs etc. M/Cs move gears with attaches dog rings. Racing cars have separate dog rings.
