working on my ferrari formula 1 1/18 diecast collection. I have 1999-2007. looking on ebay, i only see one car listed between 1970-1998. and it's $200. I searched "ferrari f1" in diecast. am i searching wrong? are these years rare? what's up?

Exoto is making comprehensive Formula one Ferrari Collection. On ebay type 1/18 Exoto. But they all tend to be over $200.

You won't find much if you just use 'ferrari f1' for 1970-1998. Try something like this for the 70s and early 80s, adding the models for late 80s and 90s (not familiar with them):

    ferrari 18 (312*,126*)

The 312T2 and 312T4 can get VERY pricey, over $300 in most cases. They were made by Exoto, and are very hot on the secondary market.

Exoto and CMC both make the 500 F2. CMC makes only the 1953 version, so far only in plain red (presentation). Exoto makes numerous versions from both the 1952 and 1953 years in racing liveries. Both companies ask for more than $200 but are well worth it, considering that an almost all plastic models from Minichamps with next to no detail(I never understood the hipe about them) can fetch more.
Exoto also made the 312, 312T, 312T2, 312T4 in numerous drivers and races versions. Out of them the rarest and hardest to find and also the most expensive are the 312T2s.
Exoto also made the 1990 642 of Prost and Brger. The really rare one is the Berger no driver version which had the "eagle" part on the tires misspelled. They caught the mistake and corrected it after they recalled the models. However few made it out(like mine).
Minichamps made the 1993, '94, '95, '96, '97, '98 F1s. Some of them can demand really high prices on the secondary market. What fetches the highest prices are the '93 Jean Alesi models and the '96 Barcelona GP "my first win with Ferrari" edition with the rain tires of Michael Schumacher (good luck finding that one for sale). From there on it has been all Hot Wheels (not the best quality but they are learning)
There were also few models made back in the late '70s and early '80s in not quite 1:18 scale by Bburago and Polistill. They can also be extremely hard to find, but don't expect much of them as far as quality goes.
Quartzo/Onix also made few '94-'95 models in 1:18 they are also very hard to get to but not as expensive as the Minichamps (go figure)
As far as I know that is all that has been made in 1:18 scale. (I am not familiar with any one-off-made-in-someone's-basement- from-resin-models, that may be out there, but I'm sure there are some)
Hope this helps to anyone trying to piece together their collection. I personally, am missing just 3 of them, but two are on their way.

    Ed,
Try doing a search on e-bay using the driver's names. You will probably get more hits.
Lucky-13-2002, is spot on with his assesment of what is available from the manufacturers. There are a few conversions available ( i.e. '98 towerwing on a minichamp car) but they're like hens teeth to find. Try e-bay Germany. For some reason the Germans seem to have a lot of the out of production cars. Bring you checkbook!

thanks for the uplifting news. i'm much more in the $100 range than the $200+. i have been lusting after the 500 for some time, but i just can't bring myself to pay. How far back did the hw's go? i am happy with them. Why is everything so expensive? you would think alot were produced and people would be selling them.

Hot Wheels started producing the 1998 F-300 w/ high exhaust.
That same year was the last for Minichamps/Pauls' Model Art.
