He is relegated to the last row with Kevin Magnussen (for both, the actual time was meaningless since the penalty put them on this row no matter what).

LOL. One English guy, one German driver and one French team director designed and built chassis, engine, gearbox, suspension, aero, engineered the cars on track, planned strategy...

The only reason Hamilton is back is to keep Russell out of the Mercedes.

Exactly......why even try to beat it. Maybe it could have gotten him up the grid IF he tried to beat it.

Yes, and? Byrne and Simon are considered English/German? What about Martinelli and Costa?

I love Italy and the Italians! But the Scuderia need the input from abroad. They needed it then and they definitely need it now.
    Martinelli, true, important guy!
Costa was the assistant of Byrne.

Formula 1, after engine damage: Mercedes turns down power
Mercedes is beaten in qualifying at the 2020 season finale in Abu Dhabi. There are several reasons for this. Among other things, it is due to the MGU-K of the Mercedes engine.

The MGU-K worries Mercedes: It sits directly on the engine

With the exception of the rain qualifying in Turkey, Mercedes was unbeaten in qualifying in the 2020 season. Until the season finale in Abu Dhabi. In the last race, of all places, you had to admit defeat on the track under normal conditions. Behind Max Verstappen, Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton were only second and third.

Even if only 0.025 seconds were missing from pole position, the defeat came as a surprise. Especially since Abu Dhabi has always been Mercedes land. The main cause of the clipping was quickly found. "We just couldn't use the soft tire properly," explained Valtteri Bottas.

In Q2, when the top drivers were chasing times on the medium, Mercedes was still ahead. In the final shootout on the soft tires, the Silver Arrows could only improve insignificantly. "That's an outlier," confirms Mercedes Motorsport Director Toto Wolff.

An outlier that can also be seen in the distances. Red Bull didn't beat Mercedes, Mercedes beat itself. Because Lando Norris is only two tenths missing in the McLaren on Bottas, the better Mercedes. The midfield should normally be a lot further away.

    Error devil in Mercedes MGU-K
But there was another problem with Mercedes. Sergio Perez's MGU-K caught fire at the Bahrain GP, and on Friday the one in the rear of George Russell started to burn. "We have a devil in there," Wolff confirmed to Motorsport-Magazin.com .

Perez lost his Bahrain podium due to a fire started by the MGU-K

"The damage to the MGU-K occurred below the mileage that it should normally last. And we still do not understand exactly why," said Wolff. The team of engineers therefore took precautionary measures: "We have reduced a little power, a little bit of performance, from all Mercedes engines."

The MGU-K is the kinetic energy recovery system. It sits at the bottom of the combustion engine and is connected to the crankshaft. When braking, the MGU-K recuperates energy by braking the crankshaft and thus also the rear wheels. At the same time, the kinetic motor-generator unit can also drive the crankshaft when accelerating. Up to 163 hp for a maximum of 33.3 seconds per lap are allowed.

    Two things:

    1) Congrats to Honda -- McLaren almost killed them off but they came back.
    2) Anyone else notice you could barely hear the cars in the broadcast today? I wonder if they are setting us up for all electric by getting us used to not missing the engine sounds.

Alonso used the softs today on his R25, but too much understeer and they didn’t last long. He’s going to the mediums on Sunday, better balance and more quick laps out of them...

If you want to know why interest in F1 is fading, you have it right there.

The cars are not exciting and the same people keep winning each weekend because the rules force others to not be able to catch up.

    Bottas is a one-lap racer.
    Hamilton is a tire preserver.

Right now, tire preservation beats faster one-lap pace.

Considering that the R25 sounds better, looks better at speed, and is one of the narrow track, light, limited aero cars from long ago, it puts in lap time that would be on race pace today without abusing track limits.

Tell me again how much better todays cars are for the fans ??

When Fiat reintroduced the 124 spider (aka a Miata with new clothes) they made a huge mistake. They put the original 124 Spider next to it.

People saw the original, saw how much better it looked, and hated the new one.

I think F1 is making the same mistake here. Look how much we have lost in the interest of "green technology".

I had one of those originals--I would much rather of had a Miata !!

Now, what they should have done was to resurect the original bodywork and assemble it on the Miata Chassis.......
