I don't think his detractors would stop their attacks in that scenario.

But I cannot see that happening anyway.

For the most part people would come around. I have seen this movie before: When Alonso was driving for Renault people on here called him Alonso-hole. Nice. Than Vettel became the arch enemy and the cry baby and what have you. The arguments were exactly the same: Vettel only won because he sat in the best car and any real Ferrari driver would be deserving blablabla

    It's called "demonising your opponent".
Politicians use that a lot now to get support to their cause.
They cannot argue against the arguments of their rivals, so they turn to baseless personal attacks.
Same on this forum. People cannot deny the facts, so they attack the personality of the winner they don't like, his lifestyle, his hobbies, etc ...

    Certainly true.

In addition there are folks on here who are so blinded by their love for Ferrari that they have to take anybody down who isn't driving for the team.

Its just called "supporting a team" rather than being a fan of an individual.
Some people see F1 as an individual sport, I don't, but its subjective.

Anybody taking points off Ferrari is an enemy, some are respected and some less so. If they sign for us they get the benefit of the doubt, if they put their heart and soul into it they get our support, if they win for us they get our adulation.

Its the same for my football team, or your NFL team I assume?

Lewis puts himself in the firing line with a high profile mega money lifestyle, to some this makes him worse than a dedicated skilled professional driving for a rival team. Personally I don't care about his lifestyle and make no judgment on it, I just wish it would effect his driving more.

In my view, it's a pity if F1 is to mimic football (soccer to some), because football is completely divided on tribal lines without much appreciation of the sport.

That's not the F1 I started to follow back in the 60s.

    Agreed in principle.

The thing that irks me is that ardent Ferrari fans would not even be willing to admit the talent and accomplishments of other drivers. Which is really kinda silly if you think about it: If Hamilton was that untalented then how come he beat the Ferraris? You have to respect your "enemy" to make your own victories and triumphs worth something.

And of course the whole thing becomes laughable (or the "fans" are shown as true hypocrits) when somebody they used to call Alonsohole becomes their mega star and darling of all times.

You don't have to like Hamilton (or any other non Ferrari driver/winner like e.g. Max) but at least show the man some respect.

    Nuff said.

PS: I don't do NFL. World Cup Soccer is it for me.

    Exactly !!!

Why not respect a winner, instead of denigrating his success?

    I will never understand that.

It's a complete lack of sportmanship in my book.

OK, I know it will be a vain endeavor but my I ask who in your opinion thinks that Lewis has "no talent"?
Most over here agree that he is ONE of the best at the moment but most likely not THE best standing above everyone else... is that already disrespectful in your opinion? Max was asked the other day by one of the "LH44-affiliated" press what make Lewis superior to the likes of Seb, Ricci or him and Max answered "his car" ;)
And this is what a lot of people think, me included.
Furthermore it sounds a little bit weird to ask for more respect for a multiple Champion Lewis considered what was thrown at "a multiple champion" Vettel in the last weeks by exactly those people who ask for more Lewis-respect.... And just as your example with Lewis and the Ferrari above: if Seb is so mentally weak, a "psycho", one who has to seek for a mental health check and is past his prime, lacks race craft.....where exactly is the achievement of Lewis beating someone like him to think this makes him one of the greatest of all time??? That simply does not add up....

Funny, that is exactly what everybody thought about the British media over the entire Schumacher career....you are the best example

I think most of us are perfectly capable of rising above the (fairly low standards of the) British media.

I don't really care much about Lewis' personality (or much for his taste in jewelry, hair and body decoration for that matter), but I do think he is a really special driver. Of the ones I've seen, Michael Schumacher and Aryton Senna were also pretty special, and although I mostly missed Jim Clarke I reckon he was too. Earlier than that I am not in a position to judge.

Vettel is clearly a very quick driver (as was Rosberg N) but I don't think either is quite as good a 'racer' as the very best. SEN, MSC and HAM have all had wins where on the day they were just head and shoulders above everybody else in ticky conditions and not necessarily the best car, and they also all have/had that ability to deliver a really special lap in qualifying to get pole.

Probably my favourite driver though was Nigel Mansell; not because he's British, nor for his sparkling personality, disarming honesty or outright speed, but just because in his Williams and Ferrari days he was so much fun to watch. For personality, it would have to be Niki or Kimi.

Speaking of Mansell: I'm just back from Jersey, the channel island where Mansell now lives and has his own museum. It's worth a visit when you're in the neighborhood.
