Vettel comes steaming round the outside and puts himself in the gap Max was creating so he'd have clean air. Arrogant move from Vettel, but not illegal. Expect Max to be as kind to him next time.
To Verstappen: OK we’ll need a five second gap to Leclerc minimum. To Verstappen: Vettel passes Verstappen OK Currently and three-and-a-half. To Verstappen: Five seconds to Vettel. Let’s go. To Verstappen: Hulkenberg passes Verstappen Mate you need to go now. Verstappen: Verstappen fails to cross the line in time I mean ****ing hell. I’m finished, right. To Verstappen: We are finished. Verstappen: Yeah they’re such wankers, honestly. Everybody is just lining up and they’re just ****ing it up. They’re just trying to be nice but everybody is just ****ing it up. To Verstappen: Make sure you save this tyre set please, Max. To Verstappen: OK box, Max, box. We probably as you expect we got pipped by both Ferraris. Only needed a 31.8, it was there for the taking unfortunately. Verstappen: Yep. To Verstappen: Make sure you go ignition P1 and then P0 please mate.
To Magnussen: OK so let’s catch up on that group at the front. We’re a little tight on time but we’ll be fine. To Magnussen: Gasly passes Magnussen. You’ve got eight second to start the lap, should be fine. Push to get to start the lap. Magnussen: What the ****? To Magnussen: We didn’t make it. Magnussen: ****ing hell. ****. To Magnussen: OK. Sorry man. Press the ‘in’ button.
To Grosjean: We do not have the margin. 20 seconds to go. To Grosjean: 15 seconds To Grosjean: Five seconds. Grosjean: You must be kidding me.
From Vettel. “Obviously everybody timed it around the same so we all left for the same spot,” he said. “If you were at the end of the train, which I was, then it was quite difficult. “When the team told me we only had 10 seconds margin to cross the line in time to make another attempt I had to think of something. I don’t know if the others were not told if everyone would have speed up the way I did then we should have all made it. “But I obviously prioritised at that point to make the lap. It felt like others were not aware.”
Comedy at the end of the session as spurious theoretical strategy stuffs loads of drivers. Well done strategists! Get your coats... Well done bottas. Glad he’s brought Bot 2.0 to this race. And nice to see Ric finally get some performance out of the Renault, although he still isn’t justifying being paid $26m per year more than Hulk whom he beat by just 4 one thousandths of a second. Bring on the race! Could be a fun Sunday...!
I think really that was it, a colossal **** up from the majority of teams all wanting to be the last one across the line. Seb was looking out of number 1 of course, and he was fully right to do so. I understand Max's frustrations also, seeing as he was ''ungentlemanly'' pushed away so to say by Vettel, but ultimately no rule broken. Fully expect Verstappen to return the favour this year when Vettel really doesn't need it to happen, mind you. I'm enjoying this new Bottas. Lets hope he carries it on.
Obviously this qualification system isn't without problem, as outlined with the Vestappen and Haas incidents. Time and time again, there are teams that miscalulate the deadline at the end of Q1, Q2 and Q3. It's alll about strategy and communication, but there is a part of luck too. For my part, I never understood why teams and drivers leave it to the last minute to set their fastest time. Can someone explain ? I may be alone in this, but I liked it when drivers were given 3 laps to qualify on their own, with no car on the track to impede them. 2 qualif sessions, with drivers let on the track one at the time at random would suit me.
I hope the season doesn't drone on like this . . . . wondering which of the two Mercedes drivers will prevail.
If the Ferraris can use their straight-line speed to pounce in the early laps, then Mercs mid-corner advantage won't be of much use. May be a Ferrari day yet...
I love this system. Really great. Teams leave it to the last minute to get the track in what should be it's best conditions. More rubber layed down, higher temperature and so on. The 3 lap quali system was alright but not so great for viewing, really....very limited track action. And when was it really interesting? Only when weather changes came and the lot that went last got affected by rain, but that rarely happened. Most often you'd have the fastest car with the most evolved track setting the fastest time.
