Yes correct and I was wrong earlier; while I did get a Milwaukee airport to Elkhart lake ride with Franz Konrad to the imsa race in 2002 and we discussed all sorts of topics it was not him but Walter Brun who was the owner of the two, yes two cars that crashed at Montreal due to a manhole cover... sorry for my early senility...and yes Jesus (Pareja) was lucky!

Cover detail. To be clear , the “ manhole cover “ was in fact a water main access plug. Very thick . Typically it was welded in place. I would assume needed to cut water off at a hydrant or main section of pipe.
The pictures show the whole assembly pulled from street.
The mounting ring “ paved over “ broke out . Predictable , yes , but a very small detail simply overlooked. Very unfortunate. (Murphys law ?. )
It looked like they tried to weld , then switched to a fast dry cement . My 2 cents ..

Would an F1 suction from the floor cause this "thing-a-ma-jig" to fail at over 200mph?

I'm not sure it came up strictly from suction. At those speeds the cars bottom out a lot! Especially at the front bib which gives all the nice sparks.

I am wondering if the bottoming out touched the water access, perhaps even scraped away some of the surrounding pavement. Maybe the housing was already cracked, but either way it caused the housing to completely break off, and once it started to lift from the suction, that was the end. So it wasn't a case of the lid simply not being welded on. The entire housing, which is thick cast iron failed. I heard reports about 30 other holes failing, but I'm not sure if that's true. They certainly had to address and inspect all of these water main covers before letting the cars back on track.

I saw pictures of them pouring concrete down the holes. I imagine the city of Las Vegas will have to dig each of this up again after the race weekend and repair them properly. These access holes were there for a reason, can't just fill them with concrete and call it a day.

I took the pics this morning on the strip. They are typical water valve/line access covers.

You can easily lift it out and drop it back in. They aren’t light, but also not heavy. I could easily imagine the negative pressure created under the car being enough to lift the cover and pull it out of the housing. Once out, unless alighted, it isn’t going to drop back in.

What surprises me the most is this can’t be the first time that this would have happened/thought of happening, especially on a road based track.

Gee did everyone, including TV viewers, miss FP2...they made it 90 minutes long. That was a fast repair on the Ferrari...hope it lasts the weekend. A little surprised that they are giving Sainz a 10 spot grid penalty considering that the damage and parts replacements to the car were not his nor the teams fault, but that of the organizers and sanctioning body. It seems to be that they did this at night so that all the lights would show. If they go through with next year's event, and run it at a proper hour, all the glitz and bling will be gone and people can watch the race.

    I 100% agree.

My love hate with Bernie is that he did do a lot of good in F-1 but then took it way too far... too much closed off, too protected, and he became the ultimate greed monster... so I think in between is where it needs to be. today its a clown show... I thought the opening thing was terrible, just noise, and frankly stupid. I had an offer on Monday to attend Vegas... part work and part pleasure... I declined. its just too much.

Here is a news flash - Vegas is tacky in the best of situations... it was never going to look impressive.... I just dont get the allure. its all fake... Peter Windsor is right they would have been better off creating a modern Nurburgring with all the latest safety out in the desert...

I'm here with the mayor. I echo everything he has posted. Lots of people want Vegas to fail but it is not. The crowd wanted to see fp1/2 but we still had fun. There are always going to be downers and unhappy people even if staff was there to wipe their rears after leaving the Porta potties. I did not see anyone disgruntled and there were lots of people. We left about 12:45 when fp2 was looking grim and on some feed somewhere we saw 2am. All that time the music was playing lots of performances and staff had the food and drink flowing until you could eat and drink no more. Staff were helpful and everywhere. Police presence was large but expected for an event this size and they were just fine helping direct people around or answering questions when an event staff guy was further away. The police were respectful and in the background and looked to enjoy not having to deal with any issues not even drunk idiots. In fact crowd was on good behavior even with the loss track time I did not see drunk and disorderly or any issues. Medical tents on sight were quiet and empty with just staff. Aside from no practice the event was perfectly orderly and fun for everyone. Stands were full during the little practice we got. I was surprised. People calling this a disaster are wrong. We could of had a rain delay or red flag from a crash and barrier damage and we would all accept that just fine. This time it was a water cover. BFD! Like toto says we are here fir the race and the rest of the fluff gets us to invest the time and money to show up for a 2hr. Race that also could be called for any number of reasons. I think we are all getting a little soft with high expectations.

Gates opened at 6pm according to the f1 ap and ticket my wife said. We planned for 730 so just walked right in after the line of people got in. She used the f1 ap to navigate from resorts world to the sphere. We at gs5 and there are 3 screens because we are looking at the performance stage too. We got lucky on a good place to sit. I wish they would put cars on the sphere but fia says no blue yellow or red on sphere when cars on track to not distract racers (important flag colors).

With all social media available just searching around I felt I knew what was happening from start of red flag but better if had official trackside communication. Yeah that was very poor. They could have kept us up to date just with social media drops on the sphere but radio silence. I knew fp2 not until 2am before it was on the track side screens. That's poor. But it's Vegas and still having fun. Just picked up some car parts for my racecar, shop supplies I can't get in cali, and restocked disposables for fishing from one of my favorite places the BassPro.

Yep. No need for it to be run in the middle of the night. After all, the great sage himself, Herr Toto, said that Europeans aren’t watching,

When Max won his first championship beating out Ham and MB, this was the story -

"Under Article 6.6 of Formula One's sporting regulations, the top three drivers in the championship are required to attend the ceremony to pick up trophies, but following the events of the last few days Hamilton, who finished second, has decided not to attend.

Wolff was invited to Paris to pick up the constructors' trophy, which Mercedes won for the eighth year in a row, but also decided not to attend."

So is it any surprise that they are the only objectors to Carlos not avoiding a 10 grid penalty?

I think Charles is a real contender for this race. Carlos's chances of winning have apparently gone down the drain.

No. Not if it was actually done correctly. The beating from a tire would more likely. We install them all the time. Occasionally even on a flight line. They did a crap job. The shut off valve caps, (that failed) have a hold down. Fine for day to day, but not this. They should have took it into consideration when they installed it. Also need to tack weld it as the lock is very pedestrian.
    Just my 2c.

Two GPs from season's end, Mercedes is 2nd in the WCC, with Ferrari 3rd only 20 points behind.

In that light, I don't see Mercedes doing any favour towards a Ferrari drivers who could beat them.

There are $ millions at stake between 2nd and 3rd in the Constructors Championship.

It may not be the display of sportmanship you expect, but business is business.

My feel for the vibe is that everyone is pretty happy with the race setup and the times so far. Yes, yesterday was a drag. But there's tons of folks here for the race, everyone I've run into is a knowledgeable race fan instead of a glitz-chaser. The hotels and casinos are packed, F1 gear everywhere (with Hamilton and Verstappen stuff well outpacing any other brands), some flashy cars (Did I mention the McLaren Speedtail just randomly parked nearby?). All in all, I'd say this is a win for the city and for Liberty. They may have to cut ticket prices some next year, but I expect the prices were intentionally higher this year due to the inaugural status.

And I got some spiffy overpriced race gear. It's nice to be able to wear Ferrari stuff in public without people thinking you're a *********.

Didn’t they say on the broadcast (eventually) that the entire housing (i.e., the metal cylinder) came apart from the concrete? So, not necessarily that the circular cover itself just came loose from the housing.
