Well, I didn't (and would not) put that spin on it...

But it's not incorrect. You're in a stronger position if you've emerged with the same points lead with 1 less race...

It really wasn't a dismal performance, he dominated the race until he made a mistake on slicks in difficult conditions. He wasn't alone in that today; VER, LEC did also, and one won the race and the other got nothing. VET, the tortoise, waited until it was dry and then showed just how fast Ferrari would have been if the race had been dry and they hadn't messed up qualifying.

But VER deserved his win today for a great drive.

It’s such a strange case. He hasn’t shown any of his talent in F1. Does he even seem to be concerned?

He might well statistically be in a stronger position (same gap, fewer races), but given that he scored no points at all, it was completely out of his control. He failed and got lucky.

Defining this as a victory for him in his championship fight or that he had any control over his own championship destiny today would be the spin.

Those who actually did well today are Verstappen and Vettel, who added good points in their teams' fights against each other, and Kvyat, who needed a strong result prior to silly season.

    All the best,
    Andrew.

You could say the same thing about Vettel last year, but folks seemed pretty keen to kick him as inadequate for not keeping his Ferrari on the track in changing conditions.

It was dismal by Hamilton's usual standards and in any track condition you'd expect the dominant car of the last few years, and of this season, to score at least some points.

    All the best,
    Andrew.

Hahaha.. it is funny how people still celebrate Lewis for that race.... Lewis crashed AND spun, how can one see anything good in that?

The only luck he had during this race was that his teammate repeated a common mistake on the day with disastrous results. Other than that, he gave up a 9 sec lead after changing off the intermediates (bad call), spun and damaged his wing, pitted outside the bollards to change the wing, received a 5-sec penalty, had to pit after a safety car with the 5-sec penalty, and was behind both Williams for a good portion of the race after spinning again at the final corner.

That’s a terrible day at the office for him. He had a season’s worth of problems in one race.

It’s probably not going to matter in the end, but think you have to call this what it was. Given it was a Merc celebration weekend, not too much positive from this one
