The F1 gods couldn't stand Ferrari's dominance any longer, so they tricked up the circuit to ensure that NO ONE would ever dominate it again. Ever. The fact is, you now have to have Lady Luck seriously on your side to win ANY race. Don't lose an engine this race, or you're screwed for this race AND the NEXT! Oops...don't drive so fast that you get bubbles in your tires - you can't change 'em or you're DQ'd !

Let's apply F1's new rules methodology to some other professional sports:

NBA - If one of your players gets injured and another has to substitute: You are automatically deducted 30 points, for this game and the next one.

PGA golf - If you lose more than one golf ball (water hazard, out-of-bounds, etc.) you're disqualified from the tournament. Putter head comes loose and you have to re-glue it? Well, that's a 20 shot penalty, for this tournament and the next one.

Tennis - If a string breaks on your tennis racket, you can fix it. More than one? You're disqualified. Oh, and you're now the last seed at next week's tourney.

Baseball - If you break a bat, it just cost you 10 runs. Break another, it's 10 from your next game, too.

Am I the only one, or have others completely lost interest in F1 racing because of the mickey-mouse rules that are intended to handicap the entire field? If I were Schumacher, I would retire and enjoy the rest of my days. What a joke.

I must say that the politics in racing (F1) is making me just plain sick. It has become the socio-demeaning norm in numerous facets of this society, to sucumb to the lowest common denominator. If you are unbeatable by the masses who are your current competitors, then instead of mandating the rest of the losers to step up to the plate... they penalize the winners. What kind of lesson are they teaching future genrations? Don't be too sucessful or you'll get stomped by the "powers that be". It's a real mess. What next? If the heavywieght champ is too tough do we make him fight with one eye closed?

I've found the races to be far more exciting now instead of the spaced out parade events they were in the last few years. If Ferrari were still dominant under the new format you wouldn't be so upset.

Gee, thanks for the cheap shot. Actually, I couldn't care less if "Ferrari were still dominant." I'm no Tiger Woods fan, but DQ'ing him for a lost ball or two would be stupid. I'm no Yankees fan, but to erase all of their runs because one of their players snaps a bat at the plate would be stupid. Yet that's what you have now with "the new format" of Formula 1. Format? The "format" is designed to ensure that if any single driver wins more than one race in a season, it's purely dumb luck. Sounds like good TV to me.

That's exactly what it is, good tv, interesting racing meant to bring in more viewers and therefore more money. Watching high speed parade laps is boring. Seems to me you just can't throw money at the car anymore.

F 1 is now a tv reality show, aka survivor of the luckiest, the tribe (weekend at bernie's and his crew) have spoken. So why not now think of an alternative, isn't racing a development for road cars? why not introduce an electric F1 engine and solid rubber tyres................

it is now officially boring as bat ****

I agree with the premise of this post. Good competition or just stupid luck. Press a button and vote so the FIA and Bernie can count the $$ they can charge for sponsors for 'good tv'.
Time for the sport to get back to....tell me Alex...I will...RACING. That amazing experience where the best car and team actually WIN!
Ah yes Alex....the car that is allowed to have its motor changed if the TEAM feels it needs it done to be competitive.
Yes....I see...also the tires Alex, change them if they show WEAR for performance and SAFETY!!
Allow them to actually qualify without reguard to how many times the logo is seen so maybe just maybe its not a one car moving billboard and actually another form of COMPETITION!!!
Yes Im not happy my RED team is down. Surely not out though. Id like to see RACING again as posted above. You know where you can actually tune and fix your car and change tires and add fuel to COMPETE!
The original poster makes a good point Ferrari and its current state notwithstanding.

The competition in F1 today is great, although I would like to see the Ferrari challenging more but not always winning for the lead. But do you really think that this competition is due to the no tire change use the engine two races rules? Those rules really suck. What sucks more is the fact that CBS decided to mess with all of us and show races on tape delay instead of live like the rest of the world gets to see.

I sort of like the qualifying just before the race on race fuel load rule, but that's about it. This is F1, let the teams do what they are best at, the extreme. Research at its best.

In the last 5 races, I've seen 4 teams with a chance to win the race.
Next race could be won by any of 6 drivers.

Durring the 2004 and 2003 seasons, I knew before I turned on the TV, that MS was going to win.

Its a new day! Gone is the one-man-show F1 had become.

    Yep I agree too.

Now I might not agree with the stupid 2 race for one engine rule but I like the fact that we atleast have a battle for a race win ... a little suspense. Watching MS toy with his far superior car was sooo boring I went right off F1 ... now if there was atleast a battle with his team mate it would have been great, but the only challenge RB can give MS is in (maybe) parenting skills ;)

    Racing is back in F1!

We were just talking about this (the family), and were saying the same thing - the ballance has swung too far today to it being a technical challenge, rather than a drivers challenge. Not as enjoyable - and this from an engineer!

That said, would you rather have rules which would turn F1 into an IROC series, or a technical free for all? I'd personally like 300 mph on the backstretch, or, simplified rules (like the previously proposed everything goes, but no electronics and only 1" wide tires!).

It's still MILES better than Nascar though, even on CBS!

    Everyone's a critic.....

I'm not sure I like the changes in the rules of the game, but there DOES seem to be a lot more action. I'm definitely a Ferrari fan, and I'm bummed we're not doing better this season, but other teams have figured it out. Ferrari has WORK to do this season!!

I totally agree. Even though it has made the playing field more 'fair' it's handicapping a team that has a DOMINATING strategy. Did you see Jean Todt's face during the race? He looked so dissapointed and angry with the race. Not because the driver's weren't doing well, but because he knew they could be WINNING if these FIA rules weren't in place.

All you whiners need to listen to Uncle Pete too.

Without fostering competition even if its because of stupid rules, there is no more F1. Comprende?

    A) The rules affect all teams (except BAR), so stop *****ing.

    B) Those tire punctures can happen to anyone, MS just got unlucky...really unlucky.

    C) If B is not true then it just shows that either MS needs to change his technique or Bridgestone needs to get their **** together. Those are both part of the competition. The tires were made to last 20 laps before, now they last 65+. What's the big deal?

Er, then Jean get your engineers to design a better car/tyre package.

Ferrari only are suffering 'cause the fncked up ... the rules are the same for all. They could have switched to Michelin, and/or they could also simply have made a bad car!

Get over it, and yeah what Mr Payne said :).

Yes, it's more "competitive" now. More parity. Everyone has a chance to win. Sports are always more interesting when the field's wide open. Unless the competitiveness is "gerry-rigged" by the sponsoring party(ies) so that "handicap" rules actually dictate the outcome. Any game or sport can be made artificially competitive by instituting "handicap" rules. But that's a rigged deck, and audiences/fans are quickly turned off by what they perceive to be a rigged deck.

When a game or sport is handicapped, the outcome has as much to do with dumb luck as skill. Some years ago, the NFL began allowing unrestricted free agency. I remember comedian George Carlin saying "I can't keep up with who is on what team anymore...these days I'm just cheering for laundry." In F1, I'm now cheering for tires!

Still better than the HIllbilly sport they call NASCAR. Oval track driving chevy's, great place to take your cousin, I mean wife.
I do wish F1 would use the yellow caution like american racing does.

I'll be brief. Its no more or less of a rigged deck than it was before. When you spending two, three, or four times as much and working twice as hard as every other team, if you can't admit thats boring and bad for the sport (which wouldn't exist without those other teams at least trying to compete) then you don't belong in the racing section.

Are you sure your in Texas? For a moment there, I thought you were in Napa Valley.

That sure was but if the wheels of todays cars touched like that someone would be off into the woods. The capabilities and limits are much, much higher on todays F1 cars.
