I rate Sainz higher than Bottas, with Perez, very hard to say. Probably depends on the track really for that one.

Barrichello never said he was nº 2, but still he had to be, and a good one sometimes. The track will tell.

Rubens was one or the greatest car developers, top notch in that respect. A good driver and an excelent one from time to time...he was also the worst starter i ever saw!

To be honest, Ferrari second driver’s name isn’t important right now,
The gap with the amazing combo Max/RB19/Honda is way too important.
We are just discussing about details when you look at the final outcome ( 2023 WDC and WCC)

Practically, yes, but not completely. Ferrari is the most storied team in F1, the pinnacle of motorsport. Surely an argument can be made that #2 at Ferrari is preferable to #1 at an inferior team where you've got no chance to win anyway. Having a strong second car in a position to affect rivals' strategy, apply pressure, and take points away when they make mistakes is critical! Sainz just hasn't been a factor. That's my impression, anyway.

Humm, not sure if that argument stands for everybody, even more when Ferrari isn't winning !!

Not every driver looks at Ferrari through rose-tinted glasses ...

And if Sainz doesn't fill the bill, who do you have in mind who could do a better job ?

I agree but it's very very tough to get this timed right:

Ferrari expected to be fighting for the title in 2022 (given how early they started on the car). It's unreasonable/unrealistic to expect to be well clear of the rest that you can have 2 #1s (forget controlling 2 of those in a championship situation). Imagine if Ferrari had Norris or Hamilton next to Leclerc last year? Further imagine we had no reliability issues or strategy **** ups..the points these guys would take of each other would result in a title lost.

the problem now is the gap between ferrari aston and Mercedes is very small, so a tenth here or there will make the difference in position.

Unless you have a guaranteed, locked in advantage (a mega engine for example), there's just no point in having 2 very strong teammates that you can't control...

    Memory lane:
Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna at McLaren, or Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg at Mercedes worked OK.
But Frank Williams lost a certain title for not giving team orders between Nigel Mansell and Nelson Piquet. .
