I'm thinking of designing an open wheel tube frame car in autodesk inventor, mostly for a portfolio/resume. I was just wondering if anyone one was familiar with the concept I plan on approaching this project with. The closest thing I can think of is SCCA F1000 but I really dislike some of the regulations they have for that racing class, chain drive in particular. I was thinking a Hayabusa engine would be the best drivetrain to build it around, maybe modify it to shaft drive with a bevel gear to bring it closer to the center of the chassis? I just wanted to see if I could get some input on this type of project.

    Thank you.

Have you looked at the 600 Racing "Legend" cars? They have those motors set up for a drive shaft , might be worth taking a look at their setup and work from there.

I've never heard of that kind of racing before, "Legends" but it looks pretty interesting. I assume they are actually running the power through a solid axle rearend. I'm definitely going to look for some more pictures on that type of car, also I think apexspeed should be a great place to get some knowledge on open wheel cars. My thoughts were to give up the weight saving of the chain drive setup, and gain a little more reliability with the shaft drive. I know there is a company that makes improved reproduction Corvette C4 rearend. Although I'm sure that will add a considerable amount of weight for the type of car I wish to design, I would expect that It should handle just about anything a motorcycle engine can put out.

+1 - some nice cars for sale there, as well as a great resource for getting up to speed.
