and if we dont see it on any other podium who cares. Be nice to see good racing they can have the bubbly. Its always in the Paddock Club if required. Too bad the good racing is not as easily obtained.
There are those who are compelled to complain on behalf of those perceived to be too weak and downtrodden to complain for themselves....like grid girls, pit bunnies and podium assistants. They think it helps them validate their progressive bona fides......
That has almost always been the case; the victims are often powerless to fight back, and it's generous souls who have to take their defense.
Most Olympic athletes do not RISK THEIR LIVES every time they compete. auto racing is special. There is nothing wrong with having a special celebration after having survived one more time. Should Indy stop giving the driver a glass of milk because some people are lactose intolerant and may be upset? The champaign thing is part of the spectacle. It's the touchdown celebration or a victory lap. Some of you would rather they just get their award by Fed ex the next day. Wow. How exciting. F1 survives from viewers. Take away the eyeballs and take away the sport. If champagne celebrations keep people glued to their sets, I don't see the problem.
Yes and I'm sure no one ever told them what might happen with three happy men each with an open bottle of champagne. Who could imagine they might get sprayed?
How can one compare spraying a magnum of Champagne on (mostly) unwilling victims ruining their clothes, their hair and their make-up with drinking a glass of milk? These are 2 different behaviours. Correct me if I am wrong, but Emerson Fittipaldi refused the glass of milk and drank orange juice once, didn't he?
He did to promote his orange juice company-- and was roundly criticized for it. In fact the next year the driver even brought it up when he got the milk. Even a year later people were p-o'd about it. The champagne shower is simply pageantry. It's the show and it makes auto racing unique. BTW: who are the unwilling victims? This is waterboarding? You don't think they know what's going to happen?
Why should the entire sport of racing stop doing 1 thing because some jackass that probably has nothing to do with the sport thinks that the young lady did not appreciate being part of the celebration? She signed up for the darn gig, she probable got paid for the gig. She could probable care less. It's harmless and people need to solve real problems not wrap a wet blanket around everything they wish they could join! (no pun intended)
Are you telling me there were no celebrations before Dan Gurney started spraying the Champagne bottle he received as prize? There are many ways to celebrate. The Chapagne spraying practise hasn't always existed, no more than the podium presentation. Before the winner used to receive his trophy, as well as a guirland of laurels, and was paraded WITH his car on a platform all around the track. I have seen it in several GPs in Europe in the early 60s. By the way, there was no track invasion allowed after the race either. As for people staying glued to their set to witness some horseplay after a GP, I have my doubt.
Ruining their clothes, their hair and makeup? I'm sure she didn't pay for that dress all the TROPHY girls were wearing. Hair and makeup isn't ruined. It can be washed and make up can be reapplied. How do you know she didn't enjoy it?
Seriously William... it's racing... it's a spectacle... the entire thing is. Why are women even there... I don't know, but as a women you're entering the event... the spectacle. This is what they do every race. It's all in good fun and no one is specifically singled out. So like most of society today... everyone needs to get over themselves. It's about choice. On Wednesday night my favorite hole in the wall restaurant has "kids eat free" and Thursday is some sort of buy one get one. Those nights attract armies of crazy kids and stupid lazy parents... the other night brings in the "if it's free it's for me" crowd... neither are conducive to me having an enjoyable dinner after a 10 hour day of analyzing data. I choose not to go those nights. I certainly wouldn't go, then complain about the atmosphere.
Yes, by all means, those poor, victimized, grid girls and podium dollies....Only the (self) righteous can save them!
Maybe you need to stick to a more dignified sport. Not sure what that might be, I tend to stick to the interesting sports where there is some excitement and emotion involved. Chess maybe. That would induce a coma in many so it might just do.
I don't seem to recall her being chained to the podium. Unless you are saying she was too "unsophisticated" to know what was coming? That is the correct word isn't it when you are too stuffy to call someone stupid? Your type seem to have that as a fall back position, assumption of lesser intellect on the part of others. So which was it? She was forced or she is stupid? Your argument requires one or the other.
Maybe you should stick to Champagne spraying as your favourite sport and leave motor racing to people who can appreciate it without all the unnecessary razzamataz ? What you think?
