I disagree with the premise Roland Ratzenberger is a forgotten man. Had Senna not been fatally injured on the same weekend, he would be more of a forgotten man than he is, IMO. Because of the nature of the Imola weekend, he is more remembered that say a Riccardo Paletti or a Helmuth Koinigg.

    Exactly,

only Senna, Ratzenberger and Villeneuve seem to get remembered on the date of their deaths.

Sad but true. And people also seem only to remember the F1 drivers that have died, as if the other forms of motorsports do not count. :(

Nice post. Peace to both these great drivers. F1 is still a dangerous game even today.

I hate to say this but that was a weekend I wish I could forget. Such a tragedy.

    RIP Roland.

One thing that I always found spooky even though it is really just a coincidence...summer 1989 I spent in the Uk when I lived near Silverstone during my racing years, and France with Sophie a Swedish girl. Lots of tourism particularly nice weather a midnight picnic at Stowe school near Silverstone etc...then I took her to see two races.

Guess who crashed in front of us.

1-At the GP Senna who like Prost had a very troublesome gear linkage that weekend could not get a gear and slid into the kitty litter at Becketts early in the race right in front of us, buried, no traction end of story. This was a time when he dominated so much that he was quite unpopular so people were cheering loudly as he got out of the car and Sophie goes: "They can't do that!"

2-A couple of weeks later we are at Oulton Park for the Gold Cup, I always loved racing there such a wonderful old school road course so we were watching the F3000 Gold Cup from the inside of Druids corner, we were practically alone there...guess who understeers off and bangs into the outside barrier in a serious shunt? Yes, Roland. "What a hit!" goes Sophie then he walked sullenly past us on his way to the pits...he recognized me from paddocks and pitlanes but no one felt there was anything to say...

I think Sophie was a witch:)

More seriously I still have trouble watching any Imola 94 videos...really avoid it..

I thought that the first photo, posted on the "F1 Legends" thread, was particularly ironic - taken at the race in Aida, Japan that preceded Imola.

I agree. F1's most terrible and unforgettable weekend. Ratzenberger was a truly talented pilot.
