Hi folks, I am missing the forward underbelly on my early L-series and are about to make a replacement panel. Can anyone advise me with regards to material choice and shape of the panel, a picture will be highly appreciated. Regards Peter Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hi Peter, It's a flat fibreglass sheet, I can get you a picture tomorrow with some dimensions. Andrew
There is a little more to it than a flat fiberglass sheet. It is made up of 2 pieces fiberglassed together. The photos below should make it very clear and it should be easy to manufacture from it. I had thought I could save some work when I found this part online for just under $50. When I opened the box I got an oversized sheet of fiberglass and nothing more. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Gentlemen, Thank you very much for all the pictures and descriptions. I now have a pretty good idea about the final design. I will start mixing the polyester right away since I'm already warmed up producing new shells for the interior.... Peter, See photos and dimensions below from my L-series. It's made of a single sheet with a gentle 5mm step up at the front section. Note the side and rear edges slightly overlap and follow the contour of the oval chassis tubes, if you want to be fussy. Looking at Gotz car, maybe a front corner was trimmed on mine, not sure. See if it needs to clear anything without trimming. Andrew Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Peter, I also noticed you have the original braided type coolant hoses running through the chassis, same on my car. I can't find exact replacements, only the wrapped type. Does anyone know if the braided type for early cars is available? Andrew
I also ended up with the wrapped version after a fruitless search for the braided stuff.....Any input appreciated Peter Image Unavailable, Please Login
Glass fiber work is very straight forward and the progress is fast compared to many of the other repair jobs on these old cars. The fiber glass is now out of the mould and ready to be fine cut and test mounted before paint. I opted to make the slight rounded edges to make as close to the orignal as possible, but I decided to go for two layers of medium heavy glass fiber and ended with a thickness slightly below 2,5 mm. Thanks to all for the great help. The panel is now installed on the car and the fit is perfect. Regards Peter Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Is this fibreglass piece also correct for the GTS? We have an aluminium panel installed and after this thread i was wondering!
