I found a very nice 355-B. 1995 - Red/Tan 23K miles, documented from day one, 2 month old belt service, upgraded headers, cats, new clutch, original valve guides and a very very nice owner. The car is priced fairly at $64K and I have a cashiers check in hand, a plane ticket paid for and transportion ready to pick it up Tuesday.

I had a PPI done at a Ferrari store to confirm Compression and Leak Down. The owner and I cannot come up with a fair price after seeing the results. Take a look:

    Cyl 1 165 psi 10% leakdown

    Cyl 2 170 psi 20% “” “

Cyl 3 165 psi 22% has intake noise

    Cyl 4 175 psi 11%

    Cyl 5 180 psi 8%

Cyl 6 160 psi 26% has exhaust noise

    Cyl 7 175 psi 14%

Cyl 8 160 psi 41% (unable to determine source, poss liner?)

No visable smoke although we did not get the car dead cold either! (they usually do not smoke much when warm)

2 Ferrari techs say this is typical 95 bad valve guide car and it needs valve guides and a possible cyclinder liner in #8. Plan on $10K - 12K for the repair. I still want the car and am willing to do the repair but the owner and I need a fair price.

What is your opinion on what should be paid for this car?

I would spilt the repair cost in half. So if the repair is 10K, just knock out 5K of the selling price.

    That what I would do.

    I say 58k to 60k

Then your into the car for 70k with everything fixed and nothing to do but drive it!!!!
If you really want that car and the seller won't move on the price, you must decide on if it's worth it to keep looking and hopfully finding another one.
Every PPI is 500 to 800 and all your time in looking/finding a car adds up...:(

Good luck with the deal and or seach..:)

    Cashiers check in hand?
That was important for us to know.

50,000 for the car, cashiers check or financed, 50,000 either way.
Repair is going to be 10k at minimum.

The Labor and parts for the engine in and out is typically $6500. the machine work and valve guide and potential sleaving and valve replacement will likely be another $10K-15K. If you are not planning on $20K repair you are making a big mistake. - voice of experience. I've had the engine out of may car 3 times at two different Ferrari dealers - the last time for valve guides which you need - which by the sound of it you're going to need valves with the test results you have. Oh by the way plan on new CATS!

I'm not an expert or an owner, but it sounds to me like the previous owner threw away a major two months ago - those are the worst compression numbers I've seen posted here, and just barely meets the compression spec (150 psi) and busts the variance spec of 10% with 12.5.

Don't expect to get any change out of a $20k bill. Eugenio's charges $13k for a major and top end job, and it sounds like you may need valves also. The liners are another thing entirely... A complete rebuild seems to be about $25k, IIRC. (Remember, this is just the stuff that we know about...)

The good side of getting it done yourself is that you know that the work was done, and (hopefully) done properly.

Sorry, but it's in your best interest that I ask - Is this really the best F355B for you?

I think he's just saying he's a second away from making the deal. I don't think he was bragging that he was paying cash...

I do agree with your pricing though. I would say 45k-50k. And yes, I realize thats very low but you have to put a lot of money into it and its a buyers market from what I've found... best of luck

Find a different one that is running great and in great cosmetic condition for 65K. This car sounds like a dog that will sour your Ferrari experience. What sucks more than buying a car and having to dump big cash into it?

Stick to the 95 GTB's though, they are the best deal to be had, provided the car is running properly, and be patient. Those leakdown #'s look scary, as well as compression #'s. What else might you find, with a car that doesn't have a good engine?

Sounds like a "nice" guy trying to dump his car. No offense to the seller, but 64K for a 1995 355 in need of a valve job (who know what else?) in the current market? Not fair, even with the 30k service and the headers, cats, and clutch. Keep lookin' bro, these cars are definitely worth the legwork. You will save money buying a good car instead of buying a POS and bringing it back up to spec. I found a great 95 back in 2007, before the economic downturn, with a great engine and all the stuff you listed for very close to the price you are negotiating on. The car has been great, and really, really fast. Never been in the shop for anything more than a fluid swap.

If you are attached to this car mid to high 50s. I agree with the other posters that the valves are just the tip of the ice berg. I would not drive my car in that condition and would disclose to anyone buying it that the valves needed replacing. 30K, valves, and mainfolds on my car were just over $20K. I would look for a better maintained car with no or only cosmetic issues.

My opinion is 55-58k for the car. 64k is a good price if it didnt need a valve job.

    WOW.
Just did my work at Import Specialists with a new clutch and major service= 23,000 dollars to Adam.
My compression numbers were no where as bad as those that you are reporting on the GTB

Car runs like a dream but I thought that my wife would not tolerate another major every 3 years so the car was put up for sale.
Only difference between your potential car and mine
    GTB VS GTS
    23k miles v29.8 k miles
No trophy v 3rd place Hartford Concourso
Oh and the fact that the valves and valve guides are brand new on mine
Could not get anyone to buy my car for more than 60k despite the monies invested

Took the car off the market Too valuable for it to go at fire sale price.

    Good luck

I really am admiring our work! The advise I would give is DOCUMENTATION, with technology today anybody can create an invoice for a big service. It is amazing the cars for sale, when you check into a service history, they suddenly don't have one. We document every service with pics also.
