Just as I suspectet my oil chain tensioner has failed. LUCKELY there was no other parts when I pulled my sump, and actually just the tensioner pad have come lose, leaving the bare metal to scrape on the chain...So only the platic pad was in my sump, and everything else is OK..Pjeeeew! I Havent been able to sleep since i saw Jagbuff´s pictures with the oil spray tubes in the sump....

Here are some pictures from the surgery.

So are the upgraded parts better, or is Hill engineering working on a better part???

a - It is the same material, similar design
b - ... still holding up after 600 miles, but since the problem is the design and materials, I would not expect it to last forever. I think that we are going to see an rash of failure on cars with higher (50K+ miles) mileage. The original service bulletin does not really address the problem with the tensioner, just the bearing. Start saving for that eventual repair ;)

Glad to hear that things are "ok" (everything is relative). What is the mileage on your car? The pads look like mine, very worn...

It would seem that 348 owners need to simply make these parts a "planned replacement", every 15 years or 30k miles to be ahead of point of failure.

Tell me one car that dosent have soem weak points, especially sports cars...

This isent so bad, espcially if you cant do a little wrenching yourself.

When the 355 gets a little older it will propperlyl have the same faults too...And then the 360.. they all have the same design..

agreed, but the new computer era cars will be MUCH harder to work on in a home mechanic's enviornment. i know 308's pale to the 348 and 355, but there are a hell of alot more people who can afford to buy the cheaper and older cars AND work on them at home. i meant no slight against your car, but it annoys me that we have threads on F chat about poor dealer service, new cars arriving not the way they were ordered, and to top it off, cars that burst into flames and blow up " because its a Ferrari ".

bull sheet i say, no wonder even the 308 GT4 is creeping up in value, the older cars have known small faults you can fix, whereas these " newer ones" all have some expensive got ya..... BB365-512 AND TR = weak and very expensive diff, 348/355= headers, valve guides, these oil tensioner thingies, 360/430 that burst into flames..... and so on.

why the hell dont we all just buy something else?

i collect / enjoy guitars, firearms, and coins, aside from "cars" , and the rise in gas prices is making me think i dont need 4 sports/ exotic cars anymore.

to get to this level to even have these things, and then have the dealers tell you "too bad" and have cars that break and burn is unacceptable.

no wonder Corvettes and Lamborghini's are selling so well.

great repair work by the way, i dont mind doing maintenance, but some of these " fix it or the car blows up " threads scare the hell out of me. my 911's never break, and my Lamborghini's have been tough as nails, if you can get them to start....:). i am not much of a GM guy anymore, so they are out too. i just wish Ferrari would embrace the true owners, and not worry about the Starbucks posers crowd. these modern cars need more passion, and need to work better.

    my apologies for my rant.

I had mine replaced during the 30K service and it is of a much different rubber material which the mechanic said was no where near as prone to failure. the plastic part was more rubbery and black. See pic

The one I install 2 months ago was the same material as Lars pics, came in a OEM box, the difference same around the mounting bolt have now uses a C-clip to hold in place rather than a bolt... Maybe that is a question for Daniel - are there different versions??

negative on this for routine r&r. I had 50+k miles on my motor many race miles never had a problem. Just because a part looks like s*it does not mean it can't take the load. I say fix it when there are reasons to do so. There is no reason to start another "this is another 348 problem" thread. It clearly is not a problem. The number of cars with this issue are no more than the number of cars that get flat tires, need a new waterpump, or an A/C recharge. This is just a part than can break and sometimes does. But it is by no means an epidemic failure in 348's.
