Slightly off topic, but I think some may enjoy this. I got my 84 QV 1 week ago and noticed the ashtray didn't open. I pried it open slightly and saw what looked like a garage door opener in there with a wire attached to it. Managed to get a small screwdriver in and unscrew the ashtray from the car and wiggled the whole thing out and found this ancient radar detector hardwired into the car! It dates to 1981/82 so I am guessing it was dealer installed. It was attached with Velcro to the bottom of the ashtray. Took me about 1 hour to remove all the glue from the Velcro strips from the ashtray. They also drilled a 1/2" hole in the side of the ashtray to install it, not too happy about that, but...

    "SUPERHETERODYNE"

Did you notice that up to now your QV has been more hetero than comparable examples? :)

    All the best,
    Andrew.

Roger that..i'll get a pic of this "beat around" board along with my two Hobie balsas...

I took it down the coast to Port Aransas, it would trim into whatever wave I could find.
Seems to be a nice one, just "experienced" judging from the patches and knee dents.

Andrew- You are too young to remember radios in the days before superhetrodyne receivers, which convert incoming high frequency signals to a lower, higher energy intermediate frequency (IF) signal at a constant frequency for easier tuning and gain control. In the old radios and other receivers, it was necessary to continuously change the tuning as the signal drifted up and down the frequency band and varied in amplitude. Superhet receivers eliminated that drift with the constant IF and allowed higher fidelity signals, such as music, to be much more accurately reproduced.

Hetrodyne referred to the principle of an IF and superhetrodyne included lowering the frequency of that IF to gain signal strength and make tuning and volume control easier.

I was wondering why there was velcro at the bottom of my ashtray. Maybe this explains it.

    Thanks Taz. :)

It sounds like having to continuously retune the radio while driving along would have been quite a distraction. I guess that's why Ferrari had to make the engine/exhaust notes on the old cars sound so good. ;) :D

    All the best,
    Andrew.
