Was wondering whay you guys think of this? Saw this outside of an auto repair shop. From what the flyer says, they serviced the A/C system, flushed the fuel injectors and cleaned the underbody. It was noted that the front brakes are 75% worn and the rear are 50% worn. The passenger door mirror is broken as seen in the pic. you can't tell from the engine pic, but there is what appears to be anti-freeze on top of 2 of the sparkplug boots (shown by arrows). it's an '83 400i with 75,000 miles (yikes) on it. i think the asking price is what is owed on the repair bill ($683). but i'm gonna call and ask.... Well if nothing else works on the car I'm sure you could find $684 worth of parts to sell on this forum, thereby making a profit on the deal!!! Grab it with both hands and don't let go!!!
Well, fair may depend upon location. If it is near me then you should have and insane low value in mind for it like $4,000 so I can get a parts car for maybe $6-8k. If it is repairable at a fair price the market runs from 12,ish to 20,ish. 400s needing little to no work start there and run up. The front turn signals uncracked are worth at least $684. If you do not buy it, post the location here as somebody here would likely snag the car. -sc
look at the plating--yellow zinc on the alternator brackets and throttle linkage...someone doted on that car. getting this car for a few thousand dollars would be a gift. Pawn everything in the house and trailer it home...Lee
If this is for real, proceed with caution. Does the mechanic have the title? Good luck with it! Art S.
I'm gonna call the shop in the morning to see what the deal with is. If it as cheap as i think, i will definitely pick this up!! I have the VIN, if somebody can run it for me....
Let us know, chances are one or more of us can tell you something about the history of the car that may help you.
Talked to the owner, he's looking to get $30,000 for it. He owns 2 resturants and he doesn't have time to drive it. It's in Richmond, Va. I'm gonna go down to and take a test drive in it this weekend. If anybody wants his number, PM me. Image Unavailable, Please Login
That initial price level suggests it should be a pretty good but not perfect example of the 400i. A detailed inspection of the car would be necessary to support that claim. -sc
Okay, spill. Did a forum search and found zip. Google search had it FS in silver/tan with 9k miles at some time. Jay, Is this one of the cars you inquired about?
Here's what little I have on 45771: 1/20/97 Sold at Barrett Jackson for $27,300 9/24/05 Offered for sale in FML in Tennessee with 43,975 miles with asking price of $26,500. Described as having been recently tuned (aren't they all?), new tailpipes, a/c refurbished, last owner for 9 years 7/06/06 Offered for sale on eBay in Tennessee with 45,500 miles and asking price of $19,500. Described as having tools and books, original tires, antenna and a/c don't work. That's all I have, maybe Dave has more.
The car is in Richmond, VA. The owner told me at one point the car was for sale for $65,000. How much were those new?
Since none of these cars was ever offically imported to the U.S., they all had to be federalized and total landed cost to a buyer in the U.S. was about $72,000 IIRC from a Car and Driver article in the 80's. The guy I bought my car from told me that he had turned down an offer of $110K for it in 1990, at the height of the Ferrari price boom. I paid quite a bit less than that for it in 1998!
The car I currently own I believe is the same one I had seen for sale with a six figure ask around the same time. I also paid a bunch less several years later. My car's original owner traded a Daytona in on it. Hindsight is 20-20 alright
My 88 (89 model Year possibly) 412 was $98K after federalization... and then there was a $6200 bill for built in radar, laser jammer (Sharks with lasers?) and enormous bag Phone...A lot of coin for 1988.
