I can't exactly remember where I took this, but I know it was in the 90s (94/95?). Never knew the importance of this car until recently. First thing I thought of was "oh my gosh, I was next to a 250LM!"

Look like the museum at Indianapolis Speedway...
The 1965 LeMans-winning Ferrari 250 LM (with a 275 engine), entered by Luigi Chinetti's North American Racing
Team and driven by American Masten Gregory and Austrian Jochen Rindt.

Very much a permanent part of the Indy Museum collection but then so was the Porsche 935 that won Le Mans and they swapped that with Bruce Meyer for some unique Indy cars. Someone crafty needs to buy some unique Indy cars and get dealing, maybe?

It is a bit perplexing that many cars donated to the museum for its permanent collection end up being sold--doesn't seem kosher to me. I can't imagine that the 250 LM will ever be sold but who knows for sure?

Does anyone know if the Speedway owns it, or is this another case of the Chinetti family having it out on loan? Because the 2015 sale at RM Sotheby's saw a 1964 Ferrari 250 LM sell for $17.6 million. With the history behind the Indy car, I'd imagine they'd fetch a better price. That's a lot of cash on hand if they ever need.

As a general rule you cede all rights to the museum when you donate and it is for the currator to decide what and where it is displayed or sold to provide funds to buy something more appropriate (it is the Indy museum after all) and in this case they really do want every Indy winner and lacking that every important car to ever race there. A Le Mans winning Ferrari 250LM and the Mercedes-Benz W196 really don't fit that remit. The only rider to that policy is where they agree to take a car for permanent display without ownership for tax reasons and then it all comes down to the contract and what is stipulated but that is a moot point in this case.

    Its definitely the speedways car......

For sure, it's the property of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum. Although I can't find a link to it, I remember reading that the museum bought it from Chinetti after negotiating a few months for something in the $11,000.00 - $12,000.00 range, circa 1970.

The car was displayed as raced at Daytona in 1970 last time I saw it a few years ago when I was at Indy. They pulled the star wheels off and put the old wires back on. NART really used that car a lot and the museum does own it.
