Understand what you are saying, but hard to believe there wouldn't be some provision to bypass. I've got a used UFI oil filter off my TR that I've been meaning to cut open, but it just hasn't gotten close to the top of my priority list ;) I'll post that eventually for comparison.

I don't know if the K & N H[igh] P[erformance] 3001 will fit a 308. Nevertheless, here are some specs. Anti Drain - Yes, Burst - 550 psi., Filters down to 10 microns, height 5.4", OD 3.8", Bypass Valve 8-11 psi., Max Flow - 12-16 gallons/minute. Not too shabby IMHO.

    Ciao,

I believe it will physically fit, but it does not have the standpipe that is required in the Ferrari application, like the UFI, Baldwin and (not recommended) Fram.

I would not use the K&N or similar Mobil 1 filters on the 308 series. When I first got my 78 308GTS and performed my first oil change, I saw the K&N and Mobil 1's were listed in the application guide, so I tried the Mobil 1, and noticed immediately from cold start the oil light was on for a long time. That worried me, and I learned about the standpipe issue. I immediately ran down to Ferrari of Seattle and got the proper UFI oil filter.

Absolutely. While the others characteristics of, e.g., others oil filters may be exemplary, if it lacks the all-important stand pipe, in sum, do not use it.

I've always used UFI filters, but I have gotten the impression that the Baldwins are actually better. Some of the truck stops here in town are reputed to carry the Baldwins. I would never install a Fram on any of my vehicles, original or not . . . but does anyone have a strong opinion regarding UFI v. Baldwin?

(I own a rare, vintage, exceptionally valuable 308 GTB!) ;)

I use Baldwin on my 328 unless I'm showing it at a FCA National show. Then I put on the UFI.

I have used Fram for my other cars and never had a problem.

I believe this thread mentions that the UFI does not have a bypass valve, so that additional feature on the Baldwin might lead some to prefer them.

I had just changed the oil and filter on my 308 for the thunderhill track day. Redline 20-50.

Well into a track session, i noticed that the oil pressure was about 1/2 of what it normally ran at that temp, (230-240 f).

Spooked, i returned to the pits and let the car cool off. On restart, with oil at about 180, i still had about 1/2 of normal oil pressure.

First guess was a stuck pressure relief plunger, so took it out polished it up, checked the spring and reinstalled - nochange.

On returning home, i installed a known good working gauge and the pressures matched the VagueLiar gauge.

Finally replaced the filter with a Baldwin and bingo oil pressure is back, so we cut open the filter - results below.

    Holy angels!

If anyone still insists on a Fram filter after this, show them those photos.

This is the Fram POS off of my 308 that the previous owner had installed.

Nice. Crushed in like a Dixie paper cup. Zero protection, all bypass. No different than running an empty recirculation cap.

That's pretty bad quality, even some of the Chinese oil filters have metal end-caps on the filter. (copies of WIX, K&N/Mobile1)

    How it's made.... "Fram"
