    Hi all,

I'm new here and thought I would chime in with an already known "two cents worth"... I drove my first FI 308 2- valve the other day and, though certainly not shocked by its lack of power/performance, I surely was a bit dismayed. The car was beautiful, with only 26K miles and quite well maintained, but it felt very heavy and underpowered. I compare this to having driven a QV some ten years ago, and that felt alive and full of passion. I do not mean to insult in any way, shape or form the owners of the 2-valve FI cars, as those cars are still Ferraris, but I can see why a great number of 2-V FI cars are for sale on places such as Ebay, Yahoo, etc. Now...all this being said, and depsite all of your fine missives on the subject...Am I looking at the same basic performance with a later (78-79) carb car as I am with a 2-Valve FI car? I know the carb sound is supposed to be awesome but, that aside, and I have researched the performance figures, am I looking at a similar feel as far as the driving experience is concerned? I.e. Has anyone hear driven both and can, therefore, offer a comparable analysis? I know I should just drive a carb car and make the comparison myself, but finding one in my area that's for sale (Southern CA) has not been easy. I am trying to decide between a carb car (smog issues in CA aside) and a QV. I know the QV is a better car, and a better performing car, but they're prices, as you all know, have been escalating. If I could find a carb car that sounds like I've heard they do, and has more punch than a 2-valve FI car, that could be the ticket for me. Otherwise, I will just "bite the bullet" and go try to find a nice QV (poor me...decisons, decisions....) Anyway, any help that could be supplied here would be greatly appreciated.

    Many thanks,

    Scott

IIRC, this car was for sale last year when he was moving to CA.

    James, you've got a QV. I'd stay put. **

Scott, you'll need to expand your search. Jim Lyons (Sports Car Company, local) has a moderate mileage, black '81 that has been for sale for a while, but there aren't exactly long lines of 308/328s for sale here in San Diego. I tried a few years back and ultimately looked/bought out of state, which wasn't too difficult.

Carb'ed cars can be tricky to get past our smog checks, but if it's complete and in good tune it should be OK. QVs and 328s should ace it.

I'd say if you're considering a 308, either get an early carb'ed car (1976-77) with all smog equipment in place -- because the DMV will check when you register the car -- or get a 328 if you don't have to have carbs. And don't buy anything until you've driven both.
