In Italy starting Aug 10, 2007 there will be free tickets for F.1, MotoGP and Soccer,
for those who drive without drinking.
Kicking off Aug. 10 the new campaign of the italian government “life is not a option” against alcohol related accidents will entail ten million sms sent to men, women and teenagers between 18 and 35 years old. Those stopped by the police and found not to have been drinking and in possession of the sms will be given a free ticket to a F.1 GP at Monza or a Moto GP at Misano or to a National soccer game in Italy.

The purpose of the italian government is to convey the message that alcohol cannot be at the center of a young sportive person and it wants to sensitize the young italians to drive safely and with the though of having a designated driver.

Too bad I am over 35 and not in Italy!

What's an sms? Sounds like this program makes it fair game to pull over kids, just cuz. Good name for the program, “life is not a option” ;)

if you are using google...and you right click your mouse on a page under options "send to" you will see ( blog, Gmail and SMS ).

Italy has different customs and laws...but it is the country where Ferrari is made.

It's a bit o/t but in italy la polizia or i carabinieri don't need a reason to stop and check anybody's documents. They can stop who they want, when they want to. It is obligatory for all male adults to carry photographic identification document at all times, even tourists. Sounds draconion compared to say, UK where I lived for a few years where they are big on civil liberties but in practice I think the system works pretty well. Unlike the UK all the law enforcement people here carry guns, even traffic wardens.

These guys wait by the side of the road and if they don't like your sunglasses then you might get pulled over for a talking-to...
